Liverpool's Summer Transfer Strategy: Targets and Moves
Liverpool’s summer is starting to feel like one long midfield press: constant movement, multiple passing options, and no clear end to the attack.
From teenage prospects in Georgia to a nine-figure chase in Germany, the club is pushing hard on several fronts at once — and forcing rivals to react.
A Georgian teenager joins the rumor mill
The latest name to flicker onto Liverpool’s radar comes from an unlikely place.
Andria Bartishvili, a gifted attacking midfielder contracted to Kolkheti Poti in Georgia’s second tier and currently on loan at Iberia 1999, has been linked with both Liverpool and Arsenal. A social media account tracking Georgian players claimed the teenager has no agreement with Arsenal and could yet choose Liverpool or Paris FC.
Bartishvili did nothing to cool the noise. He shared the post on his Instagram story, a small gesture that sent speculation spinning about where his next step might be.
Wilson heads for Elland Road
One former Liverpool winger is on the move.
Harry Wilson, now a free agent after leaving Fulham, is closing in on a switch to Leeds United. A strong season stirred interest from several clubs, but the Welsh international looks set for Elland Road as Leeds reshapes its attacking options.
Musiala revels in link-up with Wirtz
On the international stage, a Liverpool star is drawing praise from one of Europe’s brightest talents.
Jamal Musiala has spoken about how much he enjoys playing with Florian Wirtz for Germany under Julian Nagelsmann. The Bayern Munich midfielder told GFNG that he and Wirtz “play really well together” and “harmonize very well on the field,” highlighting the relaxed, free atmosphere within the team.
Musiala stressed his determination to show his best at the tournament while accepting the need for patience after injury, insisting he has the quality to reach his lofty personal goals without piling pressure on himself.
Bouaddi on the radar
Back at club level, Liverpool’s recruitment team has been busy.
Fabrizio Romano told Born and Red’s YouTube channel that Liverpool has held two meetings over Lille youngster Ayyoub Bouaddi. The midfielder has attracted interest from several clubs, with Romano noting that Liverpool has monitored him closely for almost a year.
Any move, he says, will hinge on Lille’s demands and the eventual price.
Gakpo’s future not nailed down
Not every story is about arrivals.
According to Football Insider, Liverpool would be prepared to consider a substantial offer for Cody Gakpo this summer. The Dutch forward’s second season under Arne Slot did not hit the same heights as his first, when he scored 18 goals, but he only signed a new contract a year ago. Any sale would need to be significant.
Curtis Jones: bids rejected, irritation rising
Curtis Jones, by contrast, remains firmly in Liverpool’s plans.
The Daily Mail’s Lewis Steele reports that the club has turned down a second bid from Inter Milan worth $29m, well short of Liverpool’s valuation of around $47m. The approach is said to have irritated the Anfield hierarchy.
Talks with Inter are not thought to be completely dead, yet Liverpool is planning for next season on the assumption Jones will be part of Andoni Iraola’s squad.
Diomande saga: price, patience and PSG
The biggest storyline, though, belongs to Yan Diomande.
Steele says the 19-year-old “definitely” wants a move this summer and that there is frustration in the player’s camp over how long a deal is taking. A transfer they expected to be wrapped up quickly may now drag beyond the World Cup.
RB Leipzig is holding firm on a $148m (€130m) valuation. The club may be resigned to selling, but only at its price. Steele is adamant Liverpool will eventually get the deal done, saying he thinks “this one will happen.”
Reports in France suggest Liverpool may already have outmanoeuvred Paris Saint-Germain. MediaFoot claims PSG has “thrown in the towel” on Diomande, with football advisor Luis Campos said to have spoken to both Leipzig and the player before walking away from a bidding war that would break the club’s budget.
The same report states Liverpool has reached an agreement with Diomande’s representatives, leaving only a fee with Leipzig to be finalized.
Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey believes the winger could be the perfect successor to Luis Diaz, who joined Bayern Munich a year ago. Speaking to Liverpool.com on behalf of OLBG, Heskey described Diomande as “very, very attractive,” praising his directness, work rate, and willingness to track back. For Heskey, Diomande offers the blend of pace, versatility and defensive effort Liverpool has been missing on the flank since Diaz left.
Barcola on standby, door ajar
The Diomande chase is not the only wide option Liverpool is exploring.
Fabrizio Romano reports that talks between PSG and Bradley Barcola are “completely on standby,” a pause that could tempt Liverpool or Arsenal into action. Both clubs have the French international on their winger shortlists, and Liverpool has already tracked him closely for over a year.
Romano describes the situation as “absolutely open,” dependent on PSG’s next move.
Palestra offered before Chelsea pounced
At full-back, one opportunity has already slipped away.
Ben Jacobs reports that Atalanta defender Marco Palestra was offered to both Liverpool and Arsenal as a move to England was explored. Chelsea then stepped in, hijacking Inter Milan’s pursuit and agreeing a $57m (€50m) deal, with the 21-year-old opting for Stamford Bridge.
Alternatives to Diomande – and Newcastle lurking
Liverpool is not betting everything on one winger.
The Athletic claims Leipzig would consider a bid above $148m (€130m) for Diomande after rejecting Liverpool’s opening offer of around $115m (€100m). While he remains the primary target, the club has drawn up alternatives: Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh and Cologne’s Said El Mala are among the names.
Newcastle United is watching the same market. The Athletic reports that Newcastle is tracking both El Mala and Lille’s Matias Fernandez-Pardo, two players Liverpool views as fallback options if Diomande proves unattainable.
The rivalry has a recent edge. Liverpool hijacked Newcastle’s move for Victor Munoz last week; this could be the Magpies’ chance to strike back.
Loan plans for a new generation
Away from the headline deals, Liverpool is reshaping the pathway for its youngsters.
The Athletic reports that seven players are in line for loan moves. Trey Nyoni is under consideration, with a final decision expected later in the summer. Goalkeeper Armin Pecsi, defenders Luke Chambers and Amara Nallo, midfielder James McConnell and winger Kieran Morrison are all expected to head out temporarily.
Left-back Owen Beck will stay at the club as he recovers from injury. New signing Ifeanyi Ndukwe, who officially joins this summer after a deal was agreed in January, is also likely to go straight out on loan despite not yet playing for Liverpool.
Fernandes checked, but expensive
Liverpool has also tested the waters for another high-end midfield option.
Fabrizio Romano told Born ’N Red that Liverpool contacted West Ham two weeks ago about Mateus Fernandes, asking about the conditions and price of a potential deal. No bid or formal talks followed.
West Ham’s stance is clear: the Brazilian would cost more than $112m (£85m), a figure not far off Liverpool’s offer for Diomande. Manchester United and Tottenham are both described as “busy” with the Fernandes deal.
Liverpool’s window is still in its early phases, yet the pattern is unmistakable: elite-level fees for elite-level talent, aggressive scouting of teenagers across Europe, and a willingness to let big names go if the numbers stack up.
If the club does land Diomande on its terms, with Barcola and Bouaddi still live possibilities and a crop of youngsters heading out to grow, the question won’t be whether Liverpool has changed under Andoni Iraola — it will be how quickly the rest of the league can catch up.
