Liverpool are staring at the most obvious transfer solution in Europe – and look ready to walk away from it.
The draw at Newcastle United didn’t just cost them two points. It stripped the midfield bare. Every counter-attack cut through the centre of the pitch, every transition left the back line exposed, and there was no one standing in the middle to put a foot down and say: enough.
Liverpool need a midfielder. Not a project. Not a squad option. A specialist who can sit in, shield, and still hurt teams with the ball. Right now, they don’t have that profile in the squad.
That’s why the situation around Lamine Camara is so baffling.
The profile Liverpool are crying out for
At 22, Camara has already done what most midfielders never manage in their entire careers: dominate both sides of the game at an elite level, and do it over multiple seasons in a top-five league.
There are almost no midfielders in Europe who can shoulder a huge share of the defensive workload and also consistently create chances. Camara sits in that tiny bracket – and then goes a step further.
For the 25/26 season, he is the only midfielder across the top five leagues who ranks in the top 10 per cent for both defensive workload share and big chances created. The only one. That blend of ball-winning and playmaking simply doesn’t exist anywhere else in the market right now.
And this isn’t a one-off spike. The 24/25 numbers tell the same story. Again, Camara stands alone as the only midfielder to hit the top 10 per cent in both metrics in back-to-back campaigns. Two full seasons of elite, two-way output at 22 years old.
Strip the data back and the picture is simple: he does everything to an above-average level for a top-five-league midfielder and is genuinely elite in the exact areas Liverpool are desperate to fix.
The window is closing – and so is the gap
This is what makes the current stand-off so strange. Finding a midfielder this late in a transfer window is notoriously difficult. Clubs don’t want to sell when there’s no time to replace a cornerstone of their side, no matter how big the offer. The pool of realistic options shrinks to almost nothing.
Yet Camara is available.
Foot Mercato and other outlets report that Chelsea are pushing ahead with a deal, and that Liverpool have already been offered the chance to sign him. In a market where suitable options are scarce, one of the most plug-and-play fits in Europe is on the table.
And Liverpool look ready to pass.
The expectation is that the Reds will move on to other targets while Camara heads to Stamford Bridge. That means trying to prise away a different midfielder from a reluctant club, late in the window, at a higher premium, for a player who almost certainly offers a worse tactical fit.
Chelsea, meanwhile, would be landing a 22-year-old who has already proved, twice, that he can dominate defensively and still create big chances at a level almost no one else can match.
For Liverpool, the equation feels brutally clear. They’ve seen their midfield exposed in the most public way possible. They’ve been offered a ready-made solution who fits their needs almost perfectly. And the clock is ticking.
If they let Camara slip to a direct rival now, how many more chances will they get to fix the heart of this team so cleanly?
