Liverpool's Chaotic Transfer Window: Hughes on the Move
Liverpool’s transfer window is ending as it began: loud, tense and slightly chaotic. And right in the middle of it all stands Richard Hughes, a sporting director who looks to be counting down his final days at Anfield.
His expected move to Al Hilal is edging closer, bringing an eventful spell on Merseyside towards an abrupt close. It has been a short tenure, but not a quiet one.
One season, Liverpool were lifting another Premier League title. The next, they were firefighting through messy windows, watching high-profile targets slip away in public.
In Hughes’ first summer, Martin Zubimendi said no. In his third, it was Yan Diomande. Only his second window really resembled a success, with several priority targets actually walking through the door. The problem? Too many of those signings still haven’t justified the money, or the faith, invested in them.
Supporters have felt that disconnect growing. When a club leans on a sporting director to shape recruitment, fans expect to see a plan. Clear profiles. Contingency options. A department that feels half a step ahead of the market, not scrambling to keep up with it.
Recently, it has looked anything but.
At times, Liverpool’s strategy has resembled throwing darts in the dark and hoping one lands somewhere near the bullseye. That might work in a pub on a Tuesday night. It is no way to run an elite club’s summer rebuild.
The timing could hardly be worse. The Premier League season is now just hours away and the squad still feels unfinished. Holes remain all over the pitch. Most significantly, Andoni Iraola does not yet have the full set of players he needs to impose his style, his tempo, his ideas.
This is not the summer Liverpool imagined when they drew up their plans months ago. Something has to give, and fast.
Instead, they are still locked in the same long-running negotiation. Bradley Barcola has been on the agenda for weeks, possibly months, and Liverpool are still trying to find a breakthrough with Paris Saint-Germain.
At this point, it feels like a staring contest. Who blinks first?
It is a dangerous game for a club already so thin on depth in key areas. Even if Liverpool finally get Barcola over the line, the work does not stop there. The hole on the right wing, left by Mohamed Salah, remains gaping. They need another wide forward who can operate on that flank and do it at a high level.
Ibrahim Mbaye has been floated as one potential option, but senior figures at Liverpool have cooled talk of anything advanced. For now, that interest is little more than exploratory, another name on a long list rather than a deal in motion.
And so the same question keeps circling back: where are the reinforcements? The clock is ticking, the pool of realistic targets is shrinking, and the margin for error is disappearing.
There is at least one front where Liverpool appear ready to push hard. According to Fabrizio Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, the club are continuing talks with PSG over Barcola and are expected to accelerate the move in the coming days.
Romano’s line is clear: negotiations are ongoing, and Liverpool are gearing up to step on the gas. Given how long this saga has rumbled on, that kind of acceleration usually points in one direction.
If the Italian transfer specialist is right, Liverpool are only days away from sealing a major deal for the French winger. The question is whether that long-awaited agreement arrives in time to steady a window – and a season – that already feels on the brink.
