Kounde ticks almost every box. A France international, he has largely operated at right-back for Barcelona, yet he carries genuine pedigree at centre-back as well. That dual role would allow Liverpool to address two problem areas with one signing.
He is no fringe player either. Since arriving from Sevilla, Kounde has made 188 appearances for Barcelona, a figure that underlines how heavily the club has leaned on him. His reliability and athleticism have stood out in a side that demands intensity.
“Jules is a fighter,” the Barcelona coach said earlier this year. “He’s always focused. We’re all human, and sometimes you don’t have your best day, but he’s always fighting. Even when things don’t start well. I appreciate what he’s doing. He has a top-notch mentality.”
That mentality is exactly what Liverpool is trying to stack throughout the squad. The club wants players who can live inside a high-pressing, aggressive system, and who bring the right character off the pitch as well as quality on it. Kounde fits that profile as neatly as Araujo.
There is also a tactical thread running through this. Flick’s Barcelona demands energy, front-foot defending and quick transitions, traits that mirror the style Andoni Iraola is expected to lean on at Anfield. Kounde has already shown he can thrive in that environment. The adaptation curve would not be steep.
The question is whether Liverpool chooses to move now. The club still has other areas to address in this window, and any major deal for a defender of Kounde’s stature would require serious financial and strategic commitment. With City and Arsenal lurking, hesitation could be costly.
