Lucas Digne's Struggles at PSG: A Reunion That Stalled
Lucas Digne’s second life at the Parc des Princes has stalled almost before it started.
Barely weeks after returning to Paris on a deal running until 2029, the 33-year-old has been dropped from the squad for Paris Saint-Germain’s Ligue 1 meeting with Monaco on Friday, with Luis Enrique cutting him completely from his plans on the night.
This is no injury call or disciplinary move. According to L’Equipe, the decision is rooted purely in “sporting reasons” after an underwhelming start to his second spell in the capital.
A reunion that never really got going
Digne arrived from Aston Villa in the summer with a clear objective: play, and play often. Instead, his first glimpse of Ligue 1 action this season came from the bench, where he stayed for the entirety of PSG’s opener against Rennes, unused and watching.
His chance finally came a week later against Lille. It was hardly a dream scenario. PSG were 2-0 down when he was thrown on in the 71st minute, asked to help turn a game already slipping away. The team did roar back, striking in the first and fifth minutes of stoppage time to salvage a dramatic point.
But the late surge did not save Digne’s standing. The staff’s reading of his short cameo was unforgiving. Those limited minutes seem to have tipped the balance against him, leading to his full omission from the squad for the Monaco clash and hinting at a growing disconnect over his place in the hierarchy.
Opportunity lost at a crisis position
The timing makes the call even more brutal for the Frenchman.
PSG are light at left-back. Very light. Nuno Mendes, the undisputed starter, is suspended domestically after a straight red card against Lens in the Trophee des Champions, a ban that rules him out of the first three league fixtures.
On paper, the path looked clear for Digne. A suspension for the main man, a fresh contract, a fanbase ready to welcome back a familiar face. A straightforward route into the starting XI, or at least into serious contention.
Instead, Enrique has turned away from the specialist. The Spaniard has preferred to shift centre-backs Lucas Beraldo and Lucas Hernandez across to the left side of the back four rather than trust Digne with the role he was ostensibly signed to reinforce.
A long contract, a glaring vacancy, and a manager who still looks elsewhere. For Digne, the message could hardly be louder.
