Spain’s head coach Luis de la Fuente expressed strong confidence in Barcelona talents Pedri, Lamine Yamal, and Gavi as the national team prepares for its FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final against Belgium.
His remarks arrived shortly after France secured their spot in the World Cup semi-finals by defeating Morocco, leaving Spain aiming to join them in the tournament’s next stage.
Pedri’s Role in the Squad
During his media session, De la Fuente highlighted Pedri’s consistent influence within the squad, even if his performances haven’t always dazzled fans. The coach described Pedri as one of Spain’s most dependable players.
“Very good. Whether he’s on top form or not, he always sets a very good tone. It probably wasn’t the most spectacular performance, but it was certainly effective. And those who came on benefited from that work. You have to bear in mind that not everyone can be at 100%,” De la Fuente said.
He added that the team adapts when some players are not at their peak, praising Pedri for always delivering his best for the national side.
Lamine Yamal’s Growth and Potential
Regarding Lamine Yamal, De la Fuente acknowledged the young player’s eagerness but emphasized the importance of keeping him composed to prevent anxiety from affecting his game.
“Yes. I think he’s really motivated. That’s why we need to keep him calm, so that doesn’t turn into anxiety. We know the best Lamine is yet to come because he hasn’t quite reached that moment of brilliance yet,” the coach explained.
He praised Yamal’s defensive efforts in previous matches and spoke confidently about the attacker’s upcoming impact.
“He played a very mature game. He’s going to reach his full potential in attack because he’s impressive. We’re going to wait for it because he’s got what it takes.”
Gavi’s Ambition Shines Through
The coach also addressed comments from Gavi, who revealed his dream of scoring a bicycle kick in the World Cup final. De la Fuente welcomed this boldness as a sign of belief in the team’s chances.
“Well, I’d be delighted because it would mean we’d reached the final, and if Gavi – whom we love so much – were to score it on top of that. That just shows he believes we can get there. Gavi is a fantastic lad and a great footballer,” De la Fuente said.
