Manchester City have thrown money at the squad. Now Enzo Maresca has to prove it was more than a spending spree. No caveats, no soft landing. After a frantic Deadline Day that delivered Enzo Fernandez, Iliman Ndiaye and Ayyoub Bouaddi, City go into the Coventry clash with a swollen squad and some ruthless calls to make.
Fernandez reshapes the midfield
Fernandez is the marquee arrival, the one who shifts the whole picture. Signed for a British record-equalling £125m, the Argentina international is expected to walk straight into the starting XI and take control of the middle of the pitch.
His presence has an immediate casualty. Marc Guehi’s brief audition as a holding midfielder looks done. It was an interesting tweak while City waited for reinforcements, but with Fernandez now available, Maresca can restore a more orthodox structure in midfield.
Elliot Anderson is the likeliest partner, the balance to Fernandez’s authority. Anderson’s energy and discipline should free the record signing to dictate tempo and punch passes through the lines, giving City a central platform they have lacked in the early weeks.
That solidity comes at a cost higher up. The attacking midfield spots are suddenly under real strain. Rayan Cherki has opened the season in sharp form, Phil Foden remains one of the league’s outstanding talents, and yet neither can take a place for granted now. This is exactly the internal battle City wanted when they opened the chequebook. Now the shirt has to be earned.
Defence finally finding a rhythm
Behind them, the back line is beginning to resemble something settled rather than a weekly experiment.
Abdukodir Khusanov is set to continue on the right of defence, with Ruben Dias and Guehi restored to their natural roles in the centre. Josko Gvardiol should hold his place on the left. That unit has a more coherent feel than the reshuffled versions that opened the campaign, and stability matters against a Coventry side ready to pounce on any loose touch or positional lapse.
If City are to give Fernandez a platform to shine on debut, the foundation has to be firm. This back four looks the closest Maresca has come to that.
Injuries and the big calls
Not everyone is available. Matheus Nunes remains a doubt, his fitness still under question, while Jeremy Doku is ruled out with the calf injury he picked up against Arsenal in the Community Shield.
Those absences simplify some decisions but not all of them. Ndiaye, brought in for up to £65m, may have to wait for his first start. Bouaddi, an £86m investment, also appears more likely to begin on the bench. When a squad is this stacked, big fees do not guarantee immediate minutes.
Up front, the shape looks familiar. Erling Haaland will lead the line, with support expected from Antoine Semenyo, Cherki and Foden across the attacking band. Behind them, Anderson and Fernandez form the midfield pair tasked with stitching it all together.
