Manchester City Pursue Ayyoub Bouaddi as Lille Confirms Negotiations

Manchester City have stepped up their pursuit of Ayyoub Bouaddi, with Lille head coach Davide Ancelotti confirming negotiations for one of the summer’s standout World Cup performers.

The 18-year-old midfielder exploded onto the global stage with Morocco, starting in all but one of their matches as they surged to the quarter-finals. His rise has been relentless. Only weeks before the tournament, he was making his senior international debut. Before that, he had already driven Lille to third place in Ligue 1 and a Champions League return.

That kind of trajectory does not go unnoticed in Manchester.

City circling as Europe’s elite take notice

Bouaddi’s surge into senior football has drawn interest from across Europe, and Ancelotti made no attempt to play that down. Speaking to Ouest France, he acknowledged the scale of the chase.

"Of course, there are negotiations. Many clubs are interested in him," he said, underlining that City are far from alone in the race, even if they now appear to be in the strongest position.

A price has already been floated. A fee of around €100m (£85.5m) is understood to be the figure that could unlock the deal, a remarkable number for a teenager but one that reflects both his World Cup impact and his importance to Lille’s recent resurgence.

Limited minutes, big questions

The noise grew louder on Saturday.

Bouaddi played only 45 minutes in Lille’s pre-season clash with Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium, a decision that immediately sparked questions in the French media. Was he being protected? Was this the first visible sign that a move is edging closer?

Ancelotti pushed back on that narrative, insisting there was no fitness issue and no agreement in place.

"He was physically ready to play and he did play 45 minutes - but that's only because I have to manage his playing time," he explained.

The Italian was equally clear that, for now, he is planning with Bouaddi in his squad.

"He is a very, very good player and I hope he will stay with us. The season starts next week and I consider him a player at my disposal."

Hope, though, will be tested if City decide to meet Lille’s valuation.

Lille brace for opening day – and a crucial week

Lille open their Ligue 1 campaign with a trip to Angers on Sunday afternoon, and the timing could hardly be more delicate. Ancelotti, who took over earlier this summer after Bruno Genesio’s move to Marseille, is trying to build a side around a player whose future is being debated daily.

For City, this is familiar territory: identify a young midfielder already thriving under pressure, move decisively, and pay what it takes.

For Lille, it could be the week that defines not just their transfer window, but the shape of their entire season.
