Manchester City Ready to Pursue Enzo Fernandez Again
Manchester City are ready to go back in for Enzo Fernandez – and this time they intend to land him.
The Premier League champions are preparing a fresh offer for the Chelsea midfielder this week as Enzo Maresca continues a ruthless reshaping of his squad at the Etihad. City have tracked the Argentine all summer, and the saga is moving again just as his Chelsea future has been thrown into sharper focus.
Bench, boos and a brewing exit
On Monday night at Craven Cottage, Fernandez watched the opening hour of Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Fulham from the bench. For a player of his stature, that detail matters.
It was the first time he had been named among the substitutes for a Premier League game since December 2025. Under the lights in west London, Xabi Alonso instead trusted Romeo Lavia and Reece James in central midfield, a bold call that only intensified speculation around Fernandez’s next move.
When he did enter the fray, replacing Lavia on 65 minutes, the reception was hostile. Fulham fans loudly booed the World Cup winner, still unforgiving after his role in knocking England out of the World Cup with Argentina. Every touch carried a soundtrack of jeers, every pass a reminder of his growing disconnect with parts of the English crowd.
After full-time, Alonso hardly poured cold water on the rumours. Asked directly about Fernandez’s future, he said: “We will see. My wish is that we know what will happen for the future but we will see this week.” Ambiguous, but telling. Chelsea know decisions are coming.
City return to the table
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has outlined where the deal stands. City, he says, are now “prepared finally, after some time, to return to the table of negotiations and to submit a new proposal to Chelsea. So, new Manchester City bid for Enzo is coming.”
Earlier in the window, Chelsea and City had danced around a verbal exit clause of £120 million. That figure represented a one-day opportunity. City refused to go that high, the moment passed and, as Romano put it, “the story about the £120million clause collapsed on that day.”
Yet the door never fully closed. Chelsea’s stance now is more nuanced: they are willing to consider a sale if the offer is right and if the money allows them to strengthen elsewhere. With several first-team players already moved on this summer, the London club are clearly in a phase of active squad management rather than outright resistance.
On City’s side, the financial and squad context has shifted too. Sales of Tijjani Reijnders, Nico Gonzalez and Rodri have brought in significant funds, while Bernardo Silva’s exit as a free agent has eased pressure on the wage bill. Savinho and Oumar Marmoush are also expected to leave this week as Maresca trims and reshapes his options.
The result: City now feel armed and ready to make a serious push.
Enzo’s green light
The key piece of the jigsaw is the player himself. According to Romano, Fernandez has already given his approval to the move.
“Enzo says yes to Manchester City,” he reported. “From Enzo there is a green light to the move. From Enzo there is a green light to the contract… a green light on personal terms.”
That changes the tone of the whole negotiation. City know the midfielder wants the switch. Chelsea know it too. The six years remaining on his Stamford Bridge contract still give them leverage, but the dynamics are no longer purely contractual – they are also emotional and sporting.
A move to the Etihad would reunite Fernandez with Maresca, who worked with him at Chelsea and has been effusive in his private and public praise, calling him “fantastic” and a “leader” for his work with and without the ball. That familiarity is a powerful pull. So is the chance to step into a City midfield being rebuilt in Maresca’s image.
The Italian has stayed publicly cautious when asked about Fernandez. Earlier this month, he batted away questions: “In this moment I have to give you the same answer since day one, which will be always the same. He is a player from another club and I don't think it's correct to talk about other players. I'm not going to say anything about players who are not with us.”
Behind the scenes, though, City’s transfer business tells its own story.
Maresca’s new City takes shape
The champions have already spent heavily this summer. Elliot Anderson has arrived from Nottingham Forest, Mathys Detourbet from Troyes and Jeremy Monga from Leicester City. Ayyoub Bouaddi is also set to come in from Lille, adding yet another young, high-upside profile to the mix.
These are smart, strategic deals. None of them, however, carry the weight or immediate impact of a marquee midfield signing. Fernandez would be that signing – a ready-made, elite operator with Champions League and World Cup pedigree, capable of dictating games and leading a dressing room.
That is why City are “ready to beat the game and to return very, very strong for Enzo Fernandez,” as Romano put it. They see an opportunity to grab a player entering his prime, one who already knows the demands of English football and the standards Maresca expects.
Chelsea, for their part, must weigh the value of keeping a top-level midfielder against the financial and tactical flexibility his sale would bring. With Alonso beginning to stamp his own authority on the squad, the question is no longer whether Fernandez is a good player – that is beyond doubt – but whether he is the right player for this next Chelsea cycle at the price City are willing to pay.
The clock on this window is ticking. City are coming back with money and momentum. Fernandez has given his answer.
Now it is up to Chelsea to decide how high the champions have to go – and how much they are willing to reshape their own future in the process.
