Manchester City Sign Ayyoub Bouaddi for €100m
Manchester City have struck a blockbuster agreement with Lille for 18-year-old Moroccan midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, beating a host of admirers including Liverpool to one of the standout young talents of the World Cup.
The teenager, who lit up Morocco’s campaign on the biggest stage this year, will move for a total package worth €100 million ($116.9m). City will pay an initial €95m ($111m), with a further €5m ($5.9m) in add-ons, as they move aggressively to reshape a midfield stripped of both Rodri and Bernardo Silva.
Lille dig in, City don’t blink
Lille had hoped to keep Bouaddi for at least one more season. They knew what they had: an 18-year-old already dictating games at international level, and a player whose value was only likely to rise.
So they held their ground. No cut-price compromise, no late discount. Only when City pushed through with a nine-figure package did the French club finally relent and agree to a sale in this window.
Liverpool and others had circled earlier in the summer, sensing an opportunity after Bouaddi’s World Cup breakout. Interest from Anfield never turned into a bidding war, though, and City stepped in with the kind of fee that ends all conversations.
‘He plays like a 30-year-old’
Bouaddi’s World Cup performances did not just catch the eye of scouts. They impressed some of the game’s greats.
“Really impressive — he’s only 18, but he plays like a 30-year-old,” Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira said on The Rest Is Football during the tournament.
“He’s got the tactical awareness, I think he’s always well-positioned. He’s got the technical ability to play out from the back and a really strong personality. I quite like the midfield three from Morocco, but of course, he’s the talent in this team.”
That blend of maturity, positioning and personality is exactly what City now need. Rodri’s departure has ripped out the heartbeat of their midfield; Bouaddi arrives as the heir to that role, even if he will be asked to grow into it quickly.
Midfield rebuild at full speed
This is not a one-off splash. It is part of a full-scale rebuild.
City have already broken their club transfer record to land Elliot Anderson for £116 million ($158.2m). Now Bouaddi joins him as the next major piece in a new-look engine room designed for Enzo Maresca’s first season in charge after the Pep Guardiola era.
A five-year contract, with an option for a sixth, underlines how central Bouaddi is to those long-term plans. This is not a speculative signing. It is a statement: City intend to build around him.
And they are not done.
Replacements, not sacrifices
Tijjani Reijnders left in the past week, another body out of a midfield that once felt overstocked. Inside the club, the message is clear: every departure must be matched, and ideally upgraded, as Maresca is handed the tools to survive the most unforgiving succession act in modern football.
City still want at least one more midfielder before the window closes. Their sights are fixed on Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, though any deal would be eye-wateringly expensive. Chelsea are not expected to even pick up the phone for less than $130m.
Roma’s Manu Kone is also on the list, with City staff working flat out on deadline day to close one more deal and give Maresca the depth he craves.
For now, though, the headline belongs to Bouaddi. An 18-year-old who plays like a 30-year-old, walking into the space Rodri left behind.
City have paid the price. The real question is how quickly he makes that role his own.
