Manchester City has finalized a groundbreaking agreement with Lille to acquire Moroccan midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi. The 18-year-old talent is set to become the long-term replacement for Rodri, with the deal reportedly worth €100 million.
City Moves Quickly to Fill Midfield Gap
The club wasted no time after selling Rodri to Barcelona for €60 million, swiftly securing Bouaddi from Lille. As reported by The Athletic, the transfer package includes an initial €95 million fee plus up to €5 million in add-ons. Bouaddi has signed a contract extending until 2031, with an option for the club to prolong it by an additional year.
Record Transfer for Lille
This deal marks a new record sale for Lille, surpassing the previous highest fee of €80 million paid by Arsenal for Nicolas Pepe in 2019. Bouaddi, who was left out of Lille’s squad for their match against Angers to complete the transfer, holds the distinction of being Lille’s youngest-ever player. He made his debut at just 16 years and three days old during a Conference League match in September 2023 after progressing through the club’s academy.
Breakout Star at the 2026 World Cup
Bouaddi’s reputation grew significantly following his strong performances in the 2026 World Cup. As a key player in Morocco’s midfield, he started five of six matches, helping the Atlas Lions reach the quarterfinals. His composure and tactical understanding stood out, particularly in the match against Brazil where he had the highest number of touches on the pitch, helping secure a 1-1 draw.
Previously representing France at youth levels from U16 to U21, Bouaddi switched his international allegiance to Morocco in May 2026, immediately becoming an essential figure for the national team.
Ready for Premier League Challenges
Despite his young age, Bouaddi brings considerable experience, having played 42 games across all competitions last season. He contributed to Lille’s third-place finish in Ligue 1, which earned the club a spot in the Champions League. Joining a Manchester City squad undergoing a transition, Bouaddi’s arrival signals the club’s focus on securing top young talents to fill critical roles, especially in defensive midfield.
