Five Manchester United Academy Stars Ready to Bridge Recruitment Gaps for Michael Carrick

After a quiet transfer window that saw only Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos join the squad for a combined £85 million (£115m), Manchester United faces challenges in strengthening their squad depth. Manager Michael Carrick must cope with more fixtures thanks to Champions League football, but options remain slim.

The club has quietly secured two promising 18-year-olds, Tynan Thompson and Cristian Orozco. Thompson, who reportedly cost £8 million after appearances with Tottenham’s senior squad in 2025-26, offers another choice on the left wing. Orozco provides midfield cover, both potential assets for Carrick.

Several academy players have impressed during pre-season, and Carrick might find solutions among these youngsters to fill recruitment gaps. Here are five who could impact United’s campaign this season.

JJ Gabriel

At just 15, JJ Gabriel has already captured attention across English football. Last season, he scored 29 goals in 32 games, helping United reach the finals of the FA Youth Cup and U18 Premier League Cup. He earned the U18 Premier League Player of the Season award and caught Carrick’s eye, earning a senior debut in a friendly win over Atletico Madrid on August 1.

Gabriel impressed with his ball control, pace, and unpredictability as a two-footed forward, especially dangerous cutting in from the left. His ability to also play as a No.10 adds versatility amid uncertainties around Marcus Rashford, Joshua Zirkzee, and Benjamin Sesko’s availability. Though his physical adaptation to the Premier League remains unproven, his technical skills are undeniable.

Jim Thwaites

Thwaites made his first team debut against Atletico, completing 86% of passes in a brief appearance. He followed this with a goal and strong performance from defensive midfield in the U21s’ 5-1 win over Ipswich. Fans often compare him to Paul Scholes for his vision, passing range, and work rate.

With Manuel Ugarte sidelined until the new year due to an ACL injury, United lacks strength in defensive midfield. Thwaites fits the role well, offering press resistance, line-breaking passing, and dangerous set-piece delivery. His football intelligence aligns closely with Carrick’s style, hinting at a potential breakthrough season.

Shea Lacey

Lacey appeared three times for the first team last season, showing promise especially in an FA Cup match versus Brighton where he impressed despite a red card. Injuries and suspension disrupted his momentum, but he returned strongly during the summer tour.

He scored in a 5-0 victory over Rosenborg and won a penalty against Atletico. Comfortable playing behind Bryan Mbeumo, Lacey offers creative flair and excellent close control. While Mbeumo and Amad Diallo likely rank ahead of him initially, Carrick will want depth in wide and central areas for the demanding schedule. Lacey’s mental toughness and skill could earn him a bigger role.

Jacob Devaney

Devaney returned to United after an impressive loan spell at St Mirren, where he helped the Scottish Premiership club avoid relegation. The 19-year-old has taken advantage of pre-season opportunities, showing confidence and leadership even while playing out of position as centre-half in matches against Wrexham and Rosenborg.

Carrick praised Devaney’s adaptation to defence, noting his vocal presence and command on the pitch. The Republic of Ireland U21 international carries captaincy experience, filling a leadership void beyond Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire. Although Devaney might explore other clubs if senior minutes don’t come, Carrick should aim to keep him involved.

Dan Armer

Unlike Devaney, Dan Armer is experienced in central defense. The Scottish defender impressed in substitute appearances during pre-season games against Wrexham, Rosenborg, and Atletico. His style reminds many of Harry Maguire, and Maguire himself commended Armer’s performances, praising his maturity and potential.

With Matthijs de Ligt recovering from a back injury and Lisandro Martinez dealing with knocks, United’s center-back options are thin. Alongside Maguire, Leny Yoro, and Ayden Heaven, Armer stands out as a strong candidate for more playing time. At 6ft 4in, he combines physical presence with tactical savvy, making his transition to senior football plausible. His hunger to prove himself is clear, and Carrick could benefit from trusting him.
