Manchester United Monitoring Alejandro Balde's Transfer Situation
Manchester United are closely tracking Alejandro Balde’s situation at Barcelona, with the Spanish left-back edging towards the exit door after the club authorised his agent, Jorge Mendes, to seek a new destination.
Balde was left out of the squad for Sunday night’s game against Elche at the Martinez Valero, a decision that has been interpreted inside and outside the club as a clear signal: Barcelona are preparing for life without him and are already in talks over a potential transfer.
His name is circulating across Europe. England, Portugal and Italy have all been mentioned, but, according to Catalan outlet Sport, it is Manchester United that most excite the 22-year-old.
Cancelo battle shifts Balde’s stance
For much of the summer, Balde’s message was simple: he wanted to stay and fight for his place at Barcelona. Then came the reality of competing directly with Joao Cancelo.
The presence of the Portuguese full-back has changed the landscape. Minutes suddenly look harder to come by, and with Barcelona open to a sale to ease their financial strain, the player’s stance has softened.
Sport reports that Barcelona gave Mendes the green light to explore the market, and the agent has not been short of interest. Benfica have already put forward the only formal offer so far, though it falls well below the valuation set by the Catalan club.
Aston Villa are seen as one of the few sides capable of matching Barcelona’s demands, but they would first need to sell to create room for a deal.
United’s left-back puzzle
At Old Trafford, the need is obvious. Manchester United require a left-back.
Luke Shaw is entering the final year of his contract. Diogo Dalot has been pushed higher up the pitch, and both he and Noussair Mazraoui are natural right-backs being asked to cover. It is a patchwork solution for a position that demands stability.
The Manchester Evening News reports that Balde is not the only option on United’s list, yet he fits much of what the club are looking for: young, technically strong, used to a possession-based game and capable of operating at the highest level.
United have already made contact with Mendes to register their interest. They have stopped short, though, of submitting an official bid.
The cheaper alternative: Jorge Salinas
One major factor is cost.
Barcelona valued Balde at around €40–45 million only a few months ago and are reluctant to accept what they would consider a cut-price fee, even as they work to create financial margin in their wage bill and squad.
United, aware of Financial Fair Play pressures and their own spending limits, are studying a far less expensive alternative: Jorge Salinas, the 19-year-old left-back from Racing Santander.
Salinas has a release clause of around £16 million, a figure that sits miles below what Barcelona want for Balde. That gap explains why United are keeping a close eye on Balde’s situation without yet moving decisively. Salinas offers a budget-friendly route; Balde brings proven La Liga and Champions League experience at a premium price.
For now, the only concrete proposal Barcelona have received for Balde comes from Benfica, and it does not reach the level the Catalans believe reflects his value, according to Sport.
Barcelona already planning the next step
Inside Barcelona, the direction is clear. With the door now open for Balde’s departure, the sporting department has started working on signing a new left-back.
If Balde leaves, the left flank would be left to Cancelo and Gerard Martin, a thin rotation for a club facing a long, demanding season across multiple competitions.
Barcelona must strike a delicate balance: generate the funds they need without letting a 22-year-old asset go for what they see as a “paltry” sum. United, meanwhile, weigh up whether to push for a marquee solution in Balde or pivot fully towards the cheaper, emerging option in Salinas.
