Manchester United Target Barcelona's Alejandro Balde for Left-Back Role

Manchester United have been handed a major boost in their hunt for a new left-back, with Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde edging towards the exit at Camp Nou.

Spanish outlet Jijantes report that Balde has decided to leave the Catalan giants, with his agent Jorge Mendes already working to secure him a new club before the summer transfer window closes. It is a significant shift for a player who, not long ago, looked like a cornerstone of Barcelona’s future.

Last season, Balde played a key role in Barca’s domestic success. The 22-year-old racked up 42 appearances in all competitions, helping the club lift both the La Liga title and the Supercopa de Espana. His energy and aggression down the flank gave Barcelona a different dimension in transition and in sustained possession.

Now the landscape has changed. New head coach Hansi Flick does not see Balde as central to his long-term plans, and his first-team minutes are expected to be limited this season. With a player of his age and pedigree unwilling to sit on the fringes, the decision to move on has opened a door that Manchester United are keen to walk through.

United’s need at left-back is clear. Tyrell Malacia has departed on a free transfer, while Patrick Dorgu is viewed primarily as an option further forward on the left wing. Luke Shaw remains the first-choice left-back, but his injury record and heavy workload mean United want a high-level partner to share the position rather than a short-term stopgap.

The club have identified Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall as an ideal profile for that role. However, the 21-year-old is expected to stay at St James’ Park. Hall has entered talks over a new contract with Newcastle, who have offered him a place within the leadership group under manager Matthias Jaissle, reinforcing the sense that he is central to their project.

That situation pushes Balde sharply into focus. At 22, the Spain international already boasts 168 senior appearances for Barcelona, an impressive tally that underlines both his talent and his resilience at the highest level. He is known for his blistering pace, direct dribbling and powerful ball-carrying, attributes that align with United’s desire to inject more dynamism into their build-up play from the back.

For a club searching for a long-term solution on the left side of defence, a young, title-winning full-back ready to leave Barcelona does not come along often. The question now is whether United move decisively enough to turn an unexpected opportunity into a cornerstone of their back line for years to come.
