Manchester United Completes Chido Obi Loan to Willem II
Manchester United’s senior window may have slammed shut at 11pm on Tuesday, but their outgoing business didn’t stop there.
The club have confirmed that 18-year-old forward Chido Obi has agreed a season-long loan move to Dutch side Willem II, with the switch subject to registration. The deal has been possible because Dutch clubs were allowed to trade until midnight on Wednesday, giving United a 24-hour extension of sorts beyond England’s cut-off.
Obi, one of the brightest attacking prospects in the academy, made his first-team debut in February 2025 against Tottenham and has eight senior appearances to his name. Last season he did his damage at youth level, hitting 15 goals in 31 games for the Under-21s and forcing his way firmly onto the club’s radar.
Now he heads to the Eredivisie to chase regular senior minutes.
Busy summer for United’s academy
Obi is the latest in a long line of youngsters to head out on loan in what has been a frantic summer around the academy.
On deadline day itself, Jack Moorhouse agreed a temporary switch to Dundee, with United confirming that move on Wednesday evening. Ethan Wheatley, Jacob Devaney and Jayce Fitzgerald have also left on loan, part of a deliberate push to expose more homegrown talent to first-team football elsewhere.
The conveyor belt hasn’t just been about loans. There have been significant permanent exits too.
- Toby Collyer ended his Old Trafford stay with a move to West Brom in a deal that could rise to £7.6 million.
- Highly rated goalkeeper Radek Vitek joined promotion-chasing Middlesbrough, a transfer that may eventually be worth up to £14m if all conditions are met.
In total, 26 players have departed United this summer, either permanently or on loan. The club wanted to bank even more from sales and trim those classed as surplus to requirements, but once again found the market tougher than hoped.
Obi’s move, though, fits a different category. This one is about opportunity, not offloading. How quickly he seizes it in Tilburg will say plenty about his chances of forcing his way back into the Old Trafford picture next year.
