Manchester United Eye David Raum as Left-Back Search Intensifies
Manchester United have turned their attention to RB Leipzig defender David Raum as the search for a new left-back moves into the final days of the window – but there is hesitation at Old Trafford over the price and the profile.
United have already thrown close to £150m at reshaping their midfield this summer, bringing in Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. That rebuild has come at a cost. Other areas of the squad, most notably left-back, remain exposed.
Luke Shaw’s fitness record has forced United back into the market. Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall has long been viewed as the preferred option for that role, and there is understood to be approval from the player’s side, but a deal is off the table for this summer. With Hall effectively parked, United have been pushed towards alternatives.
Raum is one of them.
Raum on the list – but doubts over the deal
According to German outlet BILD, relayed by Sport Witness, the 28-year-old has made United’s left-back shortlist. Leipzig are said to be seeking around €40m for the Germany international, who produced ten goal contributions in the Bundesliga last season and is heading into the final year of his contract.
Leipzig know that contract situation weakens their hand and are braced to accept less than their ideal fee. Even so, United are described as “dithering” over committing what is seen internally as a relatively large sum for a player approaching his peak years rather than one with obvious resale value.
The tension is clear: proven quality now, or a younger project for later.
Raum himself has already acknowledged the possibility of a move. Speaking earlier this week, he said: “I’m now heading into the final year of my contract. I don’t need to lie about the fact that inquiries are coming in – that’s obviously to be expected. But as things stand, I’m looking forward to the season with Leipzig.”
The door is not wide open. It isn’t shut either.
Romano: United will sign a left-back – but not a superstar
With the deadline looming, United cannot afford to misjudge the timing. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano expects activity in the coming days and insists the club will not leave the position unaddressed.
“I think it could be busy for Man Utd in this final four or five days of the window because I can guarantee to you that Manchester United are still looking for a solution at left-back,” he said on his YouTube channel. “So Man Utd are working to sign a new left-back. I would not be surprised if they end up with a solution for a player who can be almost a guarantee.”
United have already looked at a higher-profile option. Alejandro Balde was discussed in a recent call with Jorge Mendes, but Romano says the numbers quickly killed that idea.
“Maybe not a superstar name like Balde because they considered Balde. They had a call with Jorge Mendes one week ago, but the deal is too expensive. Transfer fee, salary, too expensive. United are not going to do that, at least for now.”
The expectation is for something more pragmatic. Romano drew a parallel with the short-term signing of Sergio Reguilon, when United dipped into the market for an experienced, ready-made defender to plug a gap.
“Obviously I’m not saying Reguilon but that kind of player, experienced left-back who can provide competition, who can also be an international profile. So Manchester United are exploring this kind of options. So left-back is expected to be an area where Man Utd want to improve before the deadline. I expect them to sign there.”
Whether that “guarantee” ends up being David Raum, or another late-window solution, United’s margin for error at left-back is shrinking by the day.
