Manchester United's Battle to Retain 15-Year-Old Star JJ Gabriel
Manchester United are locked in a battle to keep hold of one of the most exciting teenagers in their academy, with 15-year-old striker JJ Gabriel attempting to walk away from the club just as his rise was gathering pace.
Gabriel, still only 15 and not 16 until 6 October, has formally notified United that he wants to cancel his registration with immediate effect. The club can challenge that request and, crucially, have no intention of letting the situation drift.
Senior figures have stepped in. Chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox are personally involved in talks with Gabriel’s family, a clear sign of how seriously United view the potential loss of a player they regard as a major prospect.
Tension Behind The Scenes
The exact reasons for the breakdown have not been made public. What is clear is that Gabriel did not train with Michael Carrick’s squad at the end of last week, with the club aware of “issues” in the relationship between United and the player’s family.
Inside Old Trafford, there is confusion as well as concern. United sources admit they are not sure how the situation has escalated to this point. With Gabriel under contract until the end of the season, they still hope to find a solution before it is too late.
A Meteoric Rise
On the pitch, Gabriel’s progress has been explosive.
Last season, despite starting the campaign as a 14-year-old, he dominated at Under-18 level. He was named Premier League Under-18 player of the year and also collected United’s own Under-18 player of the year award, underlining his impact across the age group.
Born in London, he announced himself for United’s Under-18s by scoring twice on his debut at just 14. He then became a central figure in the side that reached both the FA Youth Cup final and the Premier League Under-18 final last season, carrying a scoring threat well beyond his years.
This term, he stepped up again. Promoted into the club’s Premier League 2 squad, Gabriel scored spectacular goals in each of his first two games at that level, handling the jump in intensity with ease.
Breaking Through – Then Breaking Away?
His rise has already brushed the senior stage.
Gabriel made his senior debut for United in pre-season, appearing in the friendly against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm last month. The teenager then lit up the Uefa Youth League, hitting a hat-trick on his debut in the competition last week.
That form had pushed him to the brink of a competitive first-team bow. He had been widely expected to feature in Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup tie against Brighton, a moment that could have marked the start of his senior career in earnest.
Instead, United are facing the possibility of losing him before he even signs a scholarship.
The Clock Is Ticking
Gabriel turns 16 on 6 October, the point at which he would be able to sign a scholarship agreement. United had planned for that to be a formality. Now it has become a flashpoint.
For a club that has built its identity on nurturing young talent, the prospect of a 15-year-old who has already conquered Under-18 level, impressed in Premier League 2 and scored a Uefa Youth League hat-trick walking away is stark.
United still believe they can change the narrative. The question now is whether JJ Gabriel’s future will be written at Old Trafford, or somewhere else entirely.
