Manchester United are accelerating their bid to keep teenage sensation JJ Gabriel out of Chelsea’s reach, as the club’s summer rebuild stretches from the first team right down to the academy.
Carrick’s side have already reshaped their midfield with the arrivals of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, and the recruitment drive is far from over. United are still in the market for a third midfielder, a left-back, a winger and potentially a new centre-forward ahead of their Champions League return.
But while the spotlight sits on big-money targets, there is a quieter battle raging behind the scenes – one the club can’t afford to lose.
United fight to keep prolific teen Gabriel
JJ Gabriel, just 15, is viewed inside Carrington as one of the standout prospects of his age group. The numbers back that up. He has hit 29 goals in 32 games for United’s U18s, a return that has quickly alerted scouts across England and Europe.
Chelsea are leading the external chase, described as Gabriel’s strongest suitor outside Old Trafford, with several other Premier League and European clubs tracking him closely. United, though, have moved to shut the door.
The club are pushing hard for an agreement over a new deal and are said to be confident they can tie him down once he becomes eligible to sign scholarship terms in October. That date is seen as a flashpoint: interest is expected to spike, and United want to be ready.
The internal message is bullish. United insist they believe Gabriel’s rapid rise will continue in their colours, and staff are working to make sure one of the most coveted teenagers in the game sees his future at Old Trafford, not Stamford Bridge.
£43m striker target Tresoldi on radar
The youth focus runs alongside work on the senior squad, where United are also weighing up a move for Club Brugge striker Nicolo Tresoldi.
According to reports, United have stepped up their interest in the 21-year-old, who sits firmly on the radar of Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham and Barcelona. Any deal is expected to cost in the region of €50m (around £43m), with industry sources suggesting his price will likely fall between €45m and €50m.
Barcelona are currently viewed as favourites after losing Robert Lewandowski and speeding up their efforts to land a new No.9. Their finances, though, could complicate a deal at that price, leaving the door open for a Premier League move if they cannot meet Brugge’s demands.
With transfer fees spiralling across Europe, Tresoldi’s camp and interested clubs see him as a comparatively sensible investment: a striker with upside, available for a fee that still sits below some of this summer’s more eye-watering valuations.
United, then, find themselves juggling two very different but equally telling battles – one for a 15-year-old marksman lighting up youth football, another for a €50m forward ready for the Champions League stage. How they handle both will say plenty about the club’s long-term planning, and about who leads their attack in the years to come.
