Manchester United Set for Cash Injection from Kambwala Transfer

Manchester United are set for an unexpected but timely cash injection once Willy Kambwala seals his move from Villarreal to Como, with the Italian club reported to have beaten Osasuna to his signature.

United sold the defender to Villarreal in 2024 for an initial €5.5 million, with a further €6m in potential add-ons, but crucially built in a sizeable sell-on clause, a buy-back option and matching rights for three years. Villarreal are not believed to be collecting a major fee from Como, yet that sell-on percentage ensures Old Trafford will still see money flow back into their budget.

It is exactly the kind of deal structure that has come to define the new regime. What used to be an occasional tactic has become standard operating procedure since Ineos took control of football operations. United now look to stay financially attached to their departing talent, even once they leave the building.

  • Tyler Fredricson’s move to Lausanne-Sport carried a high-percentage sell-on clause.
  • Radek Vitek’s switch to Middlesbrough included a clause of up to 35 per cent.
  • Ethan Williams and Ethan Ennis left for Peterborough and Stockport County, respectively, with 50 per cent sell-ons locked in.

United may be cutting players from the squad, but they are refusing to walk away empty-handed from any future success those players enjoy.

That approach matters now. The Kambwala windfall, however modest, lands at a critical moment in the window as United scramble to fine-tune their squad before the deadline. Every extra euro counts.

Michael Carrick made it clear he wants that money working on the pitch, not just on a balance sheet.

"I just think we're looking to strengthen the squad," he said. "We're certainly working towards that, making the most of the situation that we have and trying to improve things and trying to move forward. You know, I said the same thing to you last time. So, yeah, certainly trying to make the most of the opportunities to finish the window stronger than we went into it. And I think we're a good way to doing that, so far."

Time, though, is running fast. United have only a narrow window to turn the Kambwala clause into concrete reinforcements. The recruitment team is expected to keep a close watch on late movement, weighing both permanent and loan options to cover the remaining weak spots in the squad.

While United crunch the numbers and scan the market, Kambwala heads in the opposite direction. He will travel to Italy to undergo his medical and finalise personal terms, ready to start a new chapter with Como in Serie A.

United’s accountants will be pleased. The real judgement comes when we see how that unexpected cheque shapes the final days of their summer rebuild.
