Manchester United's Left-Back Pursuit Hits a Wall with Ian Maatsen
Manchester United’s late push for a left-back has hit a firm brick wall – and his name is Ian Maatsen.
The club sounded out Aston Villa over a deal for the Dutch defender as the window ticks towards its final hours, but the answer from Villa Park has been emphatic. No.
United want to bring in a new left-back before the deadline, with a striker also on the agenda if Joshua Zirkzee moves on. The Dutch forward has already turned down Fiorentina, while Juventus lurk with a proposal to take him on loan for €2.5m, including a €30m option to buy next summer.
The attack can wait. Left-back is where United can act without first forcing an exit – and that’s where Maatsen came into focus.
Villa shut the door
Over the weekend, Pete O’Rourke revealed that United had made an enquiry for Maatsen, testing the water on a possible move. The response from Villa has grown louder and clearer with each passing day.
Sky Sports reporter Danyal Khan outlined the stance: Villa do not want to sell. Instead, they are preparing a new contract for the 24-year-old, whose importance to Unai Emery’s plans has only grown.
“Manchester United explored potential availability of left-back Ian Maatsen but he is set to be offered a new contract by #avfc,” Khan reported, adding that United are continuing to monitor other options at left-back and are ready to act if the right opportunity emerges. The club, he said, are trying to balance the need to strengthen now with the pursuit of longer-term targets in future windows.
On Monday, Fabrizio Romano effectively ended the Maatsen talk. The transfer specialist confirmed United’s interest but underlined Villa’s position in blunt terms.
“Aston Villa consider Ian Maatsen as key player; untouchable and he will not be sold this summer,” he wrote. “Manchester United were among clubs interested but #AVFC will not sell Maatsen. Decision made.”
That’s one target off the table – decisively.
Other avenues close just as quickly
Maatsen is not the only left-back United are unlikely to land.
Alejandro Balde has also been linked, but the 22-year-old wants to stay at Barcelona. That shuts down another high-profile option at a time when United’s need in the position is immediate rather than theoretical.
So the club may be forced to think differently. Short-term stopgap or patient long-term play?
Looking further ahead, Ben Jacobs has reported that United have Lewis Hall’s “buy in” over a potential move, with a deal viewed as realistic in the summer of 2027. The Newcastle defender is seen as a longer-term solution, not a last-minute scramble.
And that leaves a very real possibility: United could emerge from the next 36 hours without a new left-back at all, trusting what they have now and waiting for Hall next year.
With Maatsen declared untouchable and other prime targets out of reach, the clock is ticking. Do United blink, or do they hold their nerve and wait for the defender they truly want?
