Manchester United's Summer Plans: Pursuing Lewis Hall

Jason Wilcox has not wasted time stamping his authority on Manchester United’s summer plans. According to reports, the club’s director of football has given the green light for a move to sign Newcastle United’s rising star Lewis Hall, pushing hard for a deal he views as a priority.

United are heading back into the Champions League and know this squad, for all its recent improvement, is not yet built for the grind of a four-front campaign. Last summer brought a rebuilt attack and a reset in goal. This one is expected to be about the engine room, with as many as three midfield arrivals on the agenda.

But the recruitment drive will not stop there.

Hall lined up to challenge Shaw

Left-back is firmly on the radar. Luke Shaw has rediscovered his form this season and re-established himself as first choice, yet United have been here before: long, punishing seasons, heavy workloads, and a body that has not always held up. They cannot afford to walk into a Champions League campaign banking on one option.

Hall has emerged as the name at the top of the list. The Newcastle defender, valued at around £55m, is seen as the kind of signing who would not just cover Shaw but challenge him. Young, technically polished, and already proving he can handle Premier League demands, he fits the profile of what United want this summer: players who raise the level immediately and for the long term.

The pressure in the race for his signature is real. Bayern Munich are described as “serious” competition, and Newcastle’s failure to qualify for the Champions League has only sharpened the focus on Hall’s future. Caught Offside report that Wilcox is actively pushing United to “look seriously at a deal” for a player viewed inside the club as a priority target, with Hall understood to be looking at options away from St James’ Park.

Wilcox’s gamble and the budget squeeze

Wilcox’s admiration for Hall is no secret. It was reported earlier this month that he is particularly keen to bring the left-back to Old Trafford this summer. The complication is money. United’s budget is expected to be shaped first by the midfield overhaul, and it remains unclear whether they can stretch to a £55m defender without significant sales or a reshuffle of priorities.

What they do have, for now, is time and access. Hall has been omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup, which frees United to talk before and during the tournament without the usual international distractions. For a player in demand, that window could prove crucial.

Tuchel’s decision to leave Hall at home has raised eyebrows, and not just in Manchester.

Richards backs Hall over Shaw

On The Rest is Football podcast, Micah Richards did not hide where he stands in the Hall vs Shaw debate at international level.

“While we’re just on Newcastle, Lewis Hall has to start at left-back for England,” Richards said. “I think he will. He’s absolutely amazing. To go from midfield to left-back, his spatial awareness, his timing of his challenges, he’s good on the ball, he’s got a good delivery, he’s got everything.

“His performances over the last two months have been outstanding. He’s by far the best in terms [of left-back options]. Luke Shaw’s done well since United have been doing well.”

That is the crux of it. Shaw is resurgent, but Hall is surging.

For United, the question is not just whether Hall can push Shaw. It is whether, in a summer dominated by midfield needs and tight finances, Wilcox can turn his green light into a signature before Bayern — or anyone else — beats him to it.
