Manchester United Pursue Lewis Hall After England Snub

Manchester United have picked up a tailwind in their pursuit of Lewis Hall, with the Newcastle defender increasingly unsettled after missing out on Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad.

United’s interest is no secret. TEAMtalk reported on June 9 that Newcastle value the 21-year-old at around £60million, a figure that has not scared off Old Trafford. Hall, for his part, is understood to see United as a major step in his career, with the lure of Champions League football again a key part of the attraction after his taste of it on Tyneside last season.

Inside Carrington, the dial has shifted. What began as monitoring has become something more serious. The same outlet revealed on Thursday that United are preparing to ramp up their efforts to land the left-back, with internal discussions moving towards a full-scale push.

United had been deep in talks over a deal for Nathaniel Brown, but with the Germany international now heading for Bayern Munich, the recruitment team have pivoted. Their attention has swung decisively towards Hall, who is now viewed as the preferred option on the left side of defence.

There is a growing conviction within Old Trafford that Hall would say yes. Club sources are said to be confident that the defender is interested in making the move, and plans are already being drawn up for a concerted effort in the coming weeks.

The timing could hardly be more pointed.

Hall has been left ‘frustrated’, according to The Sun, after being omitted from Tuchel’s 26-man England squad for the World Cup. The feeling from the player’s side is that his case for selection was weakened by being shunted out of position at Newcastle during the run-in.

He was deployed at right-back in the 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest, Newcastle’s penultimate game before Tuchel named his squad. In April’s 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth, he lasted only 45 minutes before being substituted, then watched the next two matches against Arsenal and Brighton from the bench.

Those details matter to Hall. The report claims he believes that sequence – playing on the “wrong” side, losing his place, and missing minutes at the worst possible moment – contributed directly to his omission from the Three Lions squad.

Newcastle’s injury problems at right-back shaped much of his season. With Tino Livramento sidelined, Hall was repeatedly asked to cover on the opposite flank, often doing a job rather than playing his natural game. Livramento has now been included in Tuchel’s England squad, while Djed Spence has travelled as cover for starting left-back Nico O’Reilly, despite Spence being naturally right-footed.

From Hall’s perspective, the contrast stings. He moved positions for the team, watched others in similar situations get the nod for England, and ended up on the outside looking in.

Inside Newcastle, though, there is a firm line: no rift, no rebellion.

The club have denied any falling out between Hall and Eddie Howe over the situation, and that stance has been backed up by The Telegraph’s Northern Football correspondent Luke Edwards. Writing on X, Edwards insisted there has been no breakdown in relations, stressing that Hall is “extremely grateful” for the work Howe has done to help turn him into an England international during his time at St James’ Park.

There is another wrinkle. Hall and Howe share the same agent, a detail Edwards also highlighted. If Hall were actively agitating to leave, Newcastle would expect to know about it quickly and clearly. For now, the message from Tyneside is one of calm, not conflict.

United will read the landscape differently. A talented, Champions League-tested 21-year-old, frustrated by his international situation and not always used in his preferred role, is exactly the kind of opening elite clubs wait for. Newcastle’s £60m valuation sets the stakes. Hall’s ambition, and United’s need for a long-term solution at left-back, may decide whether that price gets met.
