Manchester United Reject £45m Djed Spence Transfer as Inter Milan Steps In

Manchester United’s search for a new full-back has taken another twist, and this time it ends with Djed Spence heading for Italy rather than Old Trafford.

INEOS have made it clear they want cover – and competition – at left-back this summer, with Luke Shaw’s ongoing fitness issues forcing the club to look hard at that side of the pitch. Lewis Hall remains a key target, but Newcastle United’s hardline stance has dragged the process out and pushed United to explore other options.

One of those was Spence. Tottenham Hotspur were ready to cash in, and, according to TEAMtalk, they offered the England international to several Premier League clubs, United among them. Spurs tried to strike while the iron was hot, leaning on the 26-year-old’s eye-catching World Cup performances and quoting a fee in the region of £45 million.

That figure stopped conversations in their tracks.

A number of top-flight clubs – Liverpool, Chelsea, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Everton as well as United – were presented with the chance to move for Spence, but the asking price was widely viewed as excessive. No one bit. No deal, no negotiations, just a firm sense that Spurs had overshot the market.

The contrast with what happens next is stark.

Sky Sports now report that Inter Milan have agreed a £30 million deal with Tottenham for Spence, with a 10 per cent sell-on clause included.

The defender, capable of operating on either flank, is closing in on a move to San Siro, and Spurs have had to trim £15 million off the figure they floated to England’s elite.

Once again, United find themselves paying for their badge. Clubs continue to load a premium onto any conversation with Old Trafford, and INEOS are clearly unwilling to play along.

Their stance has been consistent. The chance to sign Myles Lewis-Skelly from Arsenal was turned down. The Spence proposal has been rejected on price. Even as Harry Amass edges towards an exit from the academy, United are resisting the urge to lunge at the nearest available full-back.

The message is simple: they still believe Lewis Hall can be prised away from Newcastle.

At the same time, contingency plans are already in place. United have lined up lower-cost alternatives such as David Raum, Jorge Salinas and Joaquin Seys if the Hall pursuit collapses and the Magpies refuse to soften their position.

Spence will now look to rebuild and relaunch his career in Serie A. United, meanwhile, are still in the market, still under pressure, and still one decisive move away from showing exactly how ruthless this new INEOS era is prepared to be.
