Manchester United Activate £35m Clause to Sign Tielemans
Manchester United have moved decisively in the market, activating a £35million release clause to sign Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, talkSPORT understands.
The Belgian midfielder, 29, becomes the latest major piece in a sweeping overhaul of United’s engine room, with the club targeting experience, control and goals from deep after Casemiro’s departure.
Tielemans to replace Casemiro’s presence
Tielemans, who has two years left on his Villa contract, is expected to step straight into the void left by Casemiro, who is poised to join Inter Miami following his Old Trafford exit.
United have tracked midfield options all summer. Tielemans offered something they could not ignore: Premier League know-how, European pedigree and a recent body of work that marks him as one of the most influential midfielders in the division.
He arrives with 244 Premier League appearances to his name across Leicester City and Aston Villa, a career built on consistency as much as quality. Last season he became the heartbeat of Villa’s midfield, driving them to Europa League glory and being named the club’s 2024/25 Player of the Season.
Villa did not simply step aside. talkSPORT understands the Midlands club pushed to keep him, but once United’s interest firmed up and the release clause came into play, Tielemans wanted to explore the move.
A midfielder at his peak
This is not a punt on potential. Tielemans is a fully formed international leader.
He has 90 caps for Belgium and captained his country at the World Cup, where he played every game on their run to the quarter-finals. His two goals in a comeback win over Senegal underlined his knack for decisive moments from midfield, the kind of contributions United have lacked too often from deeper areas.
His tournament ended cruelly, though. A hamstring problem in the warm-up kept him out of Belgium’s 2-1 quarter-final defeat to Spain. That detail will not be lost on United’s medical department, but his overall durability across club and country paints the picture of a player trusted to go the distance in big campaigns.
Andrey Santos deal edging closer
Tielemans is unlikely to be the only new face in United’s midfield.
United are also set to complete the signing of Andrey Santos from Chelsea in a £50m move. The Brazilian represents a different profile: younger, with his best years ahead of him, but part of the same broader strategy to rewire the core of Michael Carrick’s side.
If both arrive as expected, Carrick would have a blend of experience and energy at his disposal, with Tielemans anchoring the structure and Santos offering dynamism around him.
Ederson move stalls after agreement
The midfield rebuild could have been even more dramatic.
United have agreed a £38.8m fee with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Ederson, but for now that move is on hold. The club want to carry out thorough medical checks before signing off on any transfer, and clarity on the situation is expected soon.
Ederson has been on the radar of several European clubs, and Atalanta knew this summer represented their best chance to cash in before his contract ticks down towards a free transfer in 2027. United had lined up a four-year deal with an option for an extra 12 months, signalling serious intent to make him a long-term pillar of their midfield.
For the moment, though, that plan is paused. Tielemans is done in principle; Ederson is a question mark.
Darlow arrives as homegrown cover
While the headline deals are yet to be officially unveiled, United have quietly completed one piece of business.
Goalkeeper Karl Darlow has signed from Leeds United on a three-year contract, with an option for a further year. United wanted a homegrown keeper to replace Altay Bayindir and serve as back-up to Senne Lammens, and Darlow fits that brief with Premier League experience and a reliable presence in the dressing room.
A new core taking shape
United have not officially announced any of their marquee arrivals yet, but the outline of their new spine is already emerging.
Tielemans at the heart of midfield. Santos likely to join him. Ederson waiting in the wings if medical checks satisfy the club. Darlow reinforcing the goalkeeping department.
The money is significant. The intent is clear. The question now is simple: with Tielemans stepping into Casemiro’s shoes and a new midfield being built around him, how quickly can Manchester United turn this ambitious recruitment into a team that looks worthy of the shirt?
