Manchester United Target Crysencio Summerville as Liverpool Step Away
Manchester United are closing in on a clear target for their left flank – and, for once, Liverpool are nowhere in sight.
Crysencio Summerville, one of the few bright sparks in West Ham United’s grim relegation campaign, has emerged as a leading option for Old Trafford this summer, with multiple reports outlining concrete interest from United and a cooling of talks at Anfield.
United circle as Liverpool step away
Summerville’s numbers last season were respectable in a struggling side: seven goals and five assists in 34 appearances from the left wing. West Ham went down; his stock did not. The London Stadium is braced for his departure, with a move back to the Premier League almost inevitable.
Liverpool explored a deal earlier in the year, according to The Athletic, but have since stepped back. That decision has cleared the runway for United, with Arsenal keeping a watching brief rather than driving the chase.
Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas describes Summerville as “emerging as a top left-wing target” for United. Internally, he is viewed as a “leading” candidate as the club look to reshape their attack under the INEOS regime.
World Cup reminder of his ceiling
If his club season felt underwhelming at times, his World Cup campaign with the Netherlands told a different story. Summerville delivered two goals and two assists in just four matches, before the Dutch were dumped out in a surprise last‑32 defeat to Morocco.
On the biggest stage, he carried threat, directness and end product. Those four games have stayed in the minds of recruiters. They underlined why a relegated winger can still command a premium fee.
West Ham are thought to want around £50 million. In this market, that figure is not outlandish. The comparison points tell the story: Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers would cost north of £80m and potentially up to £100m, while Everton are in no mood to lose Iliman Ndiaye on the cheap either.
Matias Fernandez-Pardo at Lille is another name on United’s list, but he lacks the Premier League minutes Summerville already owns. For a club under pressure to close the gap quickly, that matters.
Rashford question hangs over the deal
There is a catch. How aggressively United move for Summerville could hinge on Marcus Rashford.
Rashford is due back at Carrington after the World Cup, with Barcelona’s £26m option to buy now expired. The forward would like a permanent return to Camp Nou, but is open to being reintegrated at Old Trafford under Michael Carrick.
If Carrick hands Rashford a central role on the left, the urgency for another wide forward eases. If doubts remain, Summerville becomes more than just an option – he becomes a solution.
For now, United keep their options open. Summerville sits firmly on their radar, with Rogers, Ndiaye and Fernandez-Pardo also admired. On Friday, Old Trafford reporter Laurie Whitwell added further weight by naming Summerville and Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall as two players of particular interest to INEOS.
A market United cannot afford to misread
This is not just about one winger. It is about how United choose to spend in a window where every misstep carries a cost.
Rogers and Ndiaye would demand enormous outlays. Fernandez-Pardo offers upside but no guarantee of immediate impact in England. Summerville, at £50m with World Cup pedigree and Premier League experience, sits in the middle ground: expensive, but attainable; proven, yet still with room to grow.
Arsenal are monitoring. Liverpool have stepped aside. West Ham are ready to cash in. United, for once, have a clear run at a target who fits both profile and price.
Whether they take it may say as much about their faith in Rashford as it does about their belief in Crysencio Summerville.
