Manchester United wonderkid JJ Gabriel has told the club he wants to leave – and Barcelona are waiting.

At just 15, Gabriel is widely seen inside Carrington as the standout talent of his age group, the jewel of Manchester United’s academy. The club had already fought off interest earlier this year, stepping in to calm speculation and persuade the teenager to stay.

That hold has been broken.

According to Nathan Salt of the Daily Mail, Gabriel has now informed United that he intends to move on, a bombshell decision that has stunned staff who had mapped out a clear route for him towards the first team.

The timing is striking. Days ago, Gabriel lit up the UEFA Youth League, hitting a hat-trick against Sabah and becoming the youngest player ever to do so for United in the competition. It was the kind of performance that usually cements a club’s grip on a prodigy. Instead, it has been followed by a request to walk away.

Inside Old Trafford, Gabriel has not been treated as just another academy name. He has been earmarked as a future senior player, with plans already in place to bring him into the first-team squad for tomorrow’s Carabao Cup tie. United saw that as the next step in his progression. Now they are scrambling to keep him.

Barcelona, though, have been circling for years.
