Marcus Rashford's Manchester United Comeback Against AC Milan
Marcus Rashford’s Manchester United career flickered back into life in the unlikeliest of settings – Wroclaw, Poland, against the very manager who had cast him aside.
Twenty months after his last United outing, the 28-year-old stepped off the bench in the final pre-season friendly against AC Milan, now coached by former Old Trafford boss Ruben Amorim. The twist was hard to miss: Rashford, once frozen out by Amorim in December 2024, now re-emerging in United red while his old manager celebrated his first win in Milan colours.
Amorim’s night ended in triumph. Milan ran out 4-2 winners, turning the game on its head with a ruthless second-half spell. For Rashford, it was more about the symbolism than the scoreline.
He wore the No 9 shirt – though United insist squad numbers for the new season are not yet confirmed – and operated from the left flank after his introduction. The reception was curious rather than euphoric, but the message from Michael Carrick has been clear enough: Rashford is back in the picture.
The forward returns from a nomadic year, having spent last season on loan at Barcelona following a six-month stint at Aston Villa. Barcelona had an option to buy. They chose not to trigger it. United, for their part, were reported in May to prefer a permanent sale, with two years still left on his contract. The market never quite moved. Now Carrick has a decision to make.
Asked before the Milan game whether Rashford was available for transfer, the United manager drew a firm line.
“He’s our player, and he’s a good player and he gives us something a little bit different in the group,” Carrick said. “Marcus can offer us so much. He has done, and he can do again, so in that respect it’s quite exciting.”
That word – “exciting” – hints at more than lip service. Rashford is suddenly a live option for Saturday’s Premier League opener away to newly promoted Hull City. From unwanted asset to potential starter in a matter of weeks: pre-season can do that.
United unravel after bright start
For all the intrigue around Rashford, the night exposed serious concerns for Carrick.
United led twice and still contrived to lose, conceding three goals in 15 chaotic second-half minutes. Defensive frailty, poor game management, familiar themes.
Harry Maguire set the tone early, powering United ahead after just two minutes. It should have settled them. It didn’t. Milan hit back when Samuel Chukwueze punished slack defending to level, and United’s wobble deepened when Bruno Fernandes missed his second penalty in four days just before half-time.
The captain’s misfire left the door open. After the break, Patrick Dorgu briefly slammed it shut, restoring United’s lead following some dreadful Milan defending. At 2-1, United had control again.
They threw it away.
Alphadjo Cisse dragged Milan level, Goncalo Ramos then struck to tilt the game, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek completed the turnaround. Three goals, 15 minutes, and Carrick suddenly staring at a long week on the training ground before the trip to Hull.
Rashford’s cameo could not alter the tide. The bigger question now: can he help change United’s season?
Mixed signals across pre-season stage
While United stumbled, pre-season elsewhere delivered its own storylines.
At Stamford Bridge, Enzo Fernandez was greeted with boos from sections of the Chelsea support as he made his first club appearance of the summer in a friendly against Real Sociedad. It was a sour soundtrack to his return.
On the pitch, Xabi Alonso’s side were sharper. Morgan Rogers marked his Chelsea debut with a goal after just 11 minutes, but Sociedad hit back, with Joao Pedro striking twice in the second half to seal a 3-1 away win.
Tottenham enjoyed a smoother evening. Mikey Moore grabbed a brace in a 3-0 victory over Hoffenheim, a performance that will only fuel the excitement around the youngster.
Brentford went goal crazy, putting seven past Eintracht Frankfurt. Igor Thiago helped himself to a brace as the Premier League side cut loose.
Leeds United were similarly ruthless in a 4-0 home win over Augsburg, while Aston Villa endured a setback with a 2-1 defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach. Bournemouth also slipped to a 2-1 loss at Mainz, and Crystal Palace fell 2-0 at Freiburg.
At St James’ Park, Matthias Jaissle’s first game in charge of Newcastle United ended in a 2-1 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen, a reminder of the work ahead for the new man on Tyneside. Across the divide in the North East, Sunderland came from behind to beat Rennes 2-1 at the Stadium of Light, offering a more upbeat conclusion to their preparations.
Ipswich Town edged a lively contest 3-2 at Union Berlin, while Hull City – United’s opening-day opponents – wrapped up their own pre-season with a solid 0-0 draw against Nice.
So Rashford returns, Carrick searches for defensive answers, and Hull wait. The question now is simple: is this the start of Rashford’s second act at Old Trafford, or just a brief pause before the exit door swings open again?
