Marcus Rashford Set to Stay at Manchester United for 2026/27 Season
Marcus Rashford has turned his back on a summer escape route and is set to stay at Manchester United for the 2026/27 season, rebuffing a serious move from Fenerbahce, according to The Times.
The Turkish club, buoyed by Champions League qualification and eager to make a statement, had lined up the 28-year-old as the marquee signing of their window. Istanbul, European nights, a leading role in a title push – it was all on the table.
Rashford wasn’t interested.
The forward has made it clear he has no desire to swap Old Trafford for the Super Lig, a stance that represents a stark shift from the start of the summer, when his future at his boyhood club looked increasingly fragile.
His situation has been one of the sagas of the window. After a productive loan spell at Barcelona last season, Rashford’s camp explored a permanent exit, and he was understood to be pushing hard for a clean break from United earlier in the summer.
That urgency has faded. The mood has changed.
Transfer Deadline Looming
With the transfer deadline looming next Tuesday, Rashford is now locked in on winning back his place and his status under Michael Carrick. The United head coach has been openly impressed by the forward’s work in pre-season, particularly his application and fitness levels since returning to full training.
Barcelona remained Rashford’s ideal destination. A return to the Nou Camp sat at the top of his list, but the route back to Catalonia closed when the Spanish champions declined to trigger a £26m release clause in his contract. Instead, they shifted their focus elsewhere in the Premier League, bringing in Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United and Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund.
That decision left Rashford short of elite suitors. His £325,000-a-week wages have always narrowed the market, limiting the number of clubs able – or willing – to commit to a permanent deal. With only days left in the window, United are now comfortable keeping a high-earning, homegrown star who still carries weight in the dressing room.
Carrick’s Influence
Carrick’s influence has been central to the U-turn. Rashford came off the bench in United’s recent defeat to Hull City, replacing Patrick Dorgu in the second half, a small but telling step in his reintegration. Behind closed doors, his attitude has been noted.
Carrick did not hide his satisfaction, saying: "It's been pretty obvious since Marcus came back training with Kobbie [Mainoo] and Licha [Martinez] pretty much in Dublin that he's come back fantastically well, you know."
That endorsement points to a significant role in the months ahead. Rashford is expected to be involved when United host Ipswich Town on Sunday, a poignant occasion that will mark his first appearance at Old Trafford since December 2024.
For a player with 138 goals in 427 United appearances, this is not a bit-part return. His decision to stay hands Carrick a seasoned England international in the final third, strengthening a squad that finished third in the Premier League last season and believes it is on the brink of something bigger.
