Marseille Target Arsenal Keeper Illan Meslier for Late Transfer
Marseille are circling around Illan Meslier, sensing an opportunity as the Arsenal newcomer waits for his first real chance in north London before the transfer window shuts.
The French club, according to Foot Mercato, have been alerted to what they describe as the goalkeeper’s “precarious situation” at the Emirates and are weighing up a late move. Meslier only joined Arsenal last month, but his start has been quiet. Very quiet.
From Elland Road mainstay to Arsenal understudy
Meslier walked away from Leeds United at the end of his contract, leaving Elland Road on a free after six seasons and 215 appearances in all competitions. He was a central figure in both of Leeds’ promotions to the Premier League, in 2020 and again in 2025, and looked like a long-term cornerstone.
Then everything stalled.
Daniel Farke froze him out of the squad last season and Meslier has not played a minute of competitive football since March 2025. For a 26-year-old goalkeeper who had been a constant presence, the sudden stop was brutal.
Arsenal still moved quickly. The Premier League champions handed him a two-year deal, keeping him in north London until June 2028, and billed him as back-up to David Raya.
Pre-season offered a glimpse, but only that. Meslier was limited to substitute outings against Girona, Real Betis and Borussia Dortmund. When the real stuff started, he slipped further down the pecking order: Kepa Arrizabalaga took the bench spot for both the Community Shield and Friday’s league win over Coventry.
For a player who arrived talking about trophies, it is a jarring reality.
Marseille’s goalkeeping gap
That is where Marseille step in. Bruno Genesio’s side are short in goal and they know it.
Jeffrey de Lange is the undisputed number one, but behind him the options are thin. Jelle Van Neck and Theo Vermot are on the books, yet neither has made a first-team appearance for the Ligue 1 club. One injury and Marseille are exposed.
Club officials have been working quietly to plug that gap while the window remains open. Meslier, with his Premier League and promotion pedigree, has emerged as one of their “top targets” to provide experienced cover and genuine competition for De Lange.
Reports in France say Marseille’s hierarchy are “very impressed” by his profile despite his lack of recent game time. They see the frame, the shot-stopping, the years of responsibility at Leeds, and believe the rust can be shaken off.
The snag is financial. Before they can move from admiration to a concrete offer, Marseille may need to trim their squad and cut the wage bill. Outgoings first, then a push for Meslier if the numbers add up.
Meslier’s Arsenal dream meets early reality
When Meslier signed for Arsenal, his message was clear: this was a step up, and he wanted to win.

Those words painted the picture of a keeper ready to fight his way into a title-winning side. The early weeks, though, have underlined how crowded that fight is.
Arsenal have not stood still since lifting the Premier League trophy. This summer they have added Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis and Ezri Konsa from Newcastle, Club Brugge and Aston Villa respectively, and turned Piero Hincapie’s loan from Bayer Leverkusen into a permanent £35 million deal. At the same time, Leandro Trossard, Jakub Kiwior, Christian Norgaard and Karl Hein have all been allowed to leave.
Competition is fierce everywhere. In goal, it is suffocating.
So Meslier waits. Arsenal hold a talented 26-year-old on a free transfer, a luxury depth option behind Raya and Kepa. Marseille, short of senior cover and eyeing a keeper who needs games, see an opening.
