Mason Greenwood's Marseille Situation: From Talisman to Tension

Mason Greenwood’s renaissance in France is drifting towards an uneasy end.

For months, his goals and performances have kept Marseille in the headlines for the right reasons. Now, it is the friction behind the scenes doing the talking.

From talisman to tension

According to TeamTalk, “growing friction” between Greenwood and head coach Habib Beye has pushed the situation close to breaking point. What began as a productive partnership has reportedly deteriorated sharply in recent months, leaving a summer exit described as all but inevitable.

On the pitch, the numbers still stack up. Greenwood has remained one of Marseille’s most dangerous attacking outlets in Ligue 1, a regular source of end product in a side that has blown hot and cold. Yet that output has not quietened the noise.

Inside the club, questions about his attitude in training have surfaced. Outside it, the scrutiny has grown harsher. Club legend Christophe Dugarry went as far as to say Greenwood should never play for the club again after a dip in form, a withering verdict that underlined how polarising the 24-year-old has become on the south coast.

For a player once seen as the cornerstone of Marseille’s project, the mood has shifted quickly.

Spurs links hit a wall

The moment Roberto De Zerbi walked through the door at Tottenham, the speculation almost wrote itself. De Zerbi had been a vocal defender of Greenwood during their time together in France; a reunion in north London looked like an obvious storyline.

Reality cuts that idea down. Any move to Spurs is described as “highly unlikely” and, in truth, politically toxic.

Greenwood saw charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm dropped in February 2023. Even so, his case remains a lightning rod. The Tottenham Supporters’ Trust and Proud Lilywhites had already raised concerns over De Zerbi’s appointment because of his previous defence of the player. The idea of actually signing Greenwood would provoke a far stronger backlash.

TeamTalk report that Tottenham are not considering a move and that Greenwood is effectively off-limits to Premier League clubs. For now, England is closed.

Continental heavyweights circle

Shut out of the Premier League, Greenwood still has powerful admirers across Europe.

Juventus and Atletico Madrid have both tracked him for some time, seeing a clinical finisher who can sharpen their front lines. For Juventus in particular, a move for Greenwood would form part of a broader reshaping of their attack and overall squad structure.

In Italy, reports suggest Juve are actively reviving their interest. The plan is strategic: sell well to buy big. The Bianconeri could look to cash in on high-value assets by moving them to the Premier League, then recycle that money into a deal for Greenwood, creating a transfer chain that stretches across the continent.

Marseille will not stand in the way for a bargain. They paid just over £25 million ($34m) to sign him from Manchester United and expect a significant profit if they cash out this summer. A fee in the region of €50m (£43m/$59m) has been floated as a realistic figure, one that would represent a strong return for the French club.

Manchester United would not walk away empty-handed either. A substantial sell-on clause was written into the original deal, positioning the Red Devils for a welcome windfall if their former academy product moves again.

Marseille’s balancing act

All of this unfolds against a difficult backdrop at the Vélodrome. Champions League qualification looks unlikely, and with that goes a major revenue stream. The financial pressure is real.

Selling Greenwood would hurt sporting ambition in the short term but might solve several problems at once. The fee would help Marseille balance the books and give Beye the resources to reshape a squad that needs surgery, not tweaks. It would also draw a line under a strained, high-profile situation that has overshadowed the second half of their season.

For Marseille, the question is no longer whether they can keep their talisman. It is how quickly they can turn his departure into the foundation of their next rebuild.
