Mason Mount Faces Exit as Manchester United Pursues Midfield Overhaul
Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is starting to take shape – and it could claim a high‑profile casualty.
With a deal already in place for Atalanta’s Ederson Silva and a continued push for Matheus Fernandes despite competition from Tottenham Hotspur, United are hunting numbers and quality in the middle of the pitch. To fund that, they need sales. Big ones.
Mason Mount has suddenly moved to the front of that queue.
Mount offered to Milan as Amorim gives the nod
Mount’s first year at Old Trafford never truly got going. Injuries stalled him, rhythm deserted him, and under Michael Carrick he now finds himself sliding down the pecking order.
United had initially hoped Manuel Ugarte would be the midfielder to make way, but a serious knee injury at the World Cup has shut that door. The focus has turned to Mount.
According to Milan Press, United have actively proposed Mount to AC Milan in a deal worth around €25 million (£21.5m). The Italian outlet reports that Ruben Amorim, now in charge at San Siro after his spell at Old Trafford, has given the “green light” to explore a move for the 25‑year‑old.
“Amorim’s new Milan is gearing up for a transfer window full of big signings, also featuring opportunities and proposals,” Milan Press reported on X, before naming Mount as one of the players offered to the Rossoneri in recent hours.
The report adds that information is already being exchanged between the clubs and that the working valuation sits at roughly €25m – a figure that would represent a significant loss on what United paid Chelsea, but a clean way to raise funds and clear space in a crowded midfield.
For Mount, it would be a reunion of sorts. Amorim has already coached him at Old Trafford and clearly believes he can revive the midfielder’s career in Serie A. For United, it would be a calculated sacrifice in the middle of a major reshaping of Carrick’s squad.
Diallo going nowhere as Carrick draws a line
While Mount’s future has been pushed into the shop window, Amad Diallo’s situation is the opposite.
The winger, one of the standout performers under Amorim during his time at United, has also been linked with Milan. Italian reports suggested the Serie A club were exploring a move, sensing an opportunity to prise away a player whose stock continues to rise.
That idea has been firmly shut down.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano made United’s stance crystal clear: Amad Diallo is not for sale this summer. Romano explained that Carrick has been “insistent” inside the club that the Ivorian must stay and that United “fully expect” him to be part of their plans for the new season.
The message from Old Trafford is blunt. Speculation will swirl, stories will surface, but United’s position does not change: Diallo stays.
Carrick’s decision draws a sharp contrast between two very different trajectories. Mount, once a marquee arrival, is now being actively offered out as United chase balance and fresh energy in midfield. Diallo, once a prospect on the fringes, has become central enough that the manager is prepared to slam the door on any interest from one of Europe’s giants.
United’s summer is already defined by tough calls. Mount to Milan at a cut‑price fee, Ederson Silva incoming, Fernandes still a live target, Diallo ring‑fenced by the manager. The only question now is how far this overhaul goes before the window slams shut.
