Matteo Guendouzi Receives Four-Match Ban for Post-Match Brawl

Fenerbahce midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has been hit with a four-match ban in European competition – half of it suspended – and a €50,000 (£43,000) fine for his role in the ugly post-match brawl that followed the club’s Champions League play-off win at Lyon.

The scenes erupted after Fenerbahce sealed a 3-2 aggregate victory to reach the league stage. The result should have been the headline. Instead, the fallout now belongs to Uefa’s disciplinary report.

Guendouzi’s punishment covers “insulting others present at the match, provoking spectators and violating the basic rules of decent conduct”. Two of his four games are suspended, meaning he will only serve the full term if he reoffends during a one-year probationary period.

Mason Greenwood, Fenerbahce’s English forward and a summer arrival from Lyon’s fierce rivals Marseille, has also been sanctioned. He received a one-match suspended ban, also under a one-year probation, and a €30,000 (£26,000) fine for “violating the basic rules of decent conduct”.

Lyon did not escape lightly. Goalkeeping coach Antonio Ferreira was handed a five-match touchline ban, with two of those matches suspended, after Uefa described his involvement as “serious assault” during the clashes that followed the final whistle.

The governing body also moved against both clubs collectively. Fenerbahce and Lyon were each fined €50,000 for their teams “violating the general and basic rules of conduct”.

A place in the Champions League league stage is secured. The price for how that night ended is only just becoming clear.
