Álvaro Valles guessed right, plunged low, and smothered the penalty. Real Betis clung to their 1-0 lead, and with it handed José Mourinho his first defeat since returning to the Real Madrid dugout.

Courtois still had to keep Madrid alive, denying Deossa again as Betis hunted a second. It set the stage for that final penalty, that final duel between Mbappé and Valles. Betis’ goalkeeper won it, and with it the night.
Mourinho’s momentum checked, Barcelona watching
For Madrid, the defeat snaps the early surge that had followed Mourinho’s return, 13 years after his first spell ended. Three wins had reopened old arguments about control, intensity, and ruthlessness. In Seville, the control frayed, the ruthlessness deserted them, and the margins turned cruel.
For Betis, it was a statement. A disciplined, opportunistic performance, anchored by Valles’ outstanding display and sealed by Parrott’s instinct.
The ripple extends beyond Seville. Barcelona now have the chance to move three points clear at the top when they visit Valencia on Sunday. An early gap, perhaps small on paper, can carry weight in a season that already feels charged.
Madrid will argue this was just one bad night in front of goal. The table, and the mood, may say something different if Barcelona take full advantage.
