Memphis Depay Accuses Corinthians of Betrayal Over Contract Non-Renewal
Memphis Depay has launched a blistering attack on Corinthians after the Brazilian club confirmed they will not renew his contract, leaving the Dutch international suddenly without a team.
The 32-year-old, who joined in 2024 and quickly became a talisman when fit, took to social media to accuse the club’s hierarchy of breaking their word and walking away from what he insists was a clear agreement to extend his stay.
Depay: “I will not leave this unacceptable behaviour unsanctioned”
Depay’s anger spilled out in a sharply worded statement on X, where he claimed Corinthians had gone back on a two-year extension he says was already sealed at the highest levels of the club.
“Very disappointed to read that Corinthians decided not to honour our agreement in place to extend my contract for 2 more years,” he wrote. “This renewal was explicitly agreed upon by the president as well as the sporting, legal and financial department. Some people decided however to breach this engagement.
“I didn't want this situation and always respected the club throughout the process, but now I am forced to react strongly in order to preserve my interests. In the upcoming days I will speak publicly but rest assured that I will not leave this unacceptable behaviour unsanctioned.”
The message landed like a grenade in São Paulo. A player who had been central to a trophy-laden year was now openly accusing the board of betrayal and threatening consequences, with legal or disciplinary routes very much on the table.
Corinthians hit back with financial defence
Corinthians moved quickly to put their own version of events on record. In a long, carefully crafted statement, the club framed the decision as painful but unavoidable, casting it as a matter of survival rather than choice.
“Sport Club Corinthians Paulista has decided not to renew the contract of athlete Memphis Depay,” the statement began. “This decision was taken solely and exclusively in consideration of the financial health of our institution, which demands rigorous balance and responsibility in the management of available resources.”
The club stressed its appreciation for the Dutch forward and his representatives.
“We would like to express our deep gratitude to player Memphis Depay and his entire team, who from the start of negotiations sought the best possible agreement.”
The tone was diplomatic, even warm. The message was not. Corinthians made it clear that, despite any previous talks or understandings, the numbers no longer worked.
A short spell, big impact
On the pitch, Depay’s time at Neo Quimica Arena was brief but decisive. When his body allowed, he changed games and, at times, the entire mood around the club.

That impact only sharpens the sting of his exit. A player who helped drag the team back into contention now walks away feeling, in his words, betrayed.
“A distinguished athlete” and a drawn-out saga
Corinthians acknowledged the drawn-out nature of the talks, hinting at just how complicated – and expensive – keeping Depay would have been.
“We understand that the process extended beyond the traditional deadline, but this is mainly due to the fact that we are dealing with a distinguished athlete,” the club said.
“The Board also recognises and values the tireless efforts of all the institution’s departments that worked to make the athlete’s stay feasible.”
The pressure finally told. Faced with mounting current and future obligations, the board concluded that a deal of Depay’s scale could tip the balance.
“Given Corinthians’ current and future financial obligations, it became clear that taking on a new commitment of this magnitude would not be compatible, at this moment, with the financial balance we need to preserve to ensure the institution’s sustainability,” the statement continued.
“We recognise that this was a difficult decision, but undoubtedly necessary for the future of Sport Club Corinthians Paulista. We thank everyone for their understanding and will continue working so that Corinthians remains strong, solid, and victorious.”
Storm brewing in São Paulo
The story is far from over. Club president Osmar Stabile is set to address the situation in a press conference, with Fernando Diniz’s squad now forced to navigate not only the loss of a key attacker but the fallout from Depay’s explosive claims.
Depay, now a free agent, has promised to speak publicly in the coming days and has already signalled that he will pursue action over what he calls “unacceptable behaviour.”
