Michael Kayode Shines as Brentford Defeats Tottenham 3-0

Michael Kayode marked the new Premier League season with a statement finish, firing Brentford 3-0 up on Tottenham Hotspur and deepening the gloom around Roberto De Zerbi’s first league outing in the Spurs dugout.

Three minutes into the second half at the Gtech Community Stadium, the Italy U21 defender reacted quickest to a loose ball from the second phase of a corner. One swing of his leg, a decisive touch in a crowded box, and Brentford were out of sight. Spurs, already reeling, looked stunned.

The goal capped a ruthless Brentford display built on a dominant first half. Keane Lewis-Potter struck first, Vitaly Janelt added the second, and the hosts walked off at the interval with a deserved 2-0 lead and the visitors hanging on.

Kayode’s strike did more than kill the contest. It underlined the rise of a player Brentford have moved quickly to secure. The 22-year-old signed a long-term contract extension earlier in the summer, tying him to the club until 2032, and he is now backing that commitment with decisive moments on the pitch.

This was only his second goal in the Premier League. The first came in a 2-2 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers in March, a glimpse then of his attacking threat from deep. Here, on opening weekend, he delivered again, this time against an Italian coach in De Zerbi and with fellow Italian Sandro Tonali lining up on the opposite side for Spurs.

Kayode already has 10 caps for Italy U21s but is still waiting for a first call from the senior national team. Performances like this, on a Premier League stage and in a game that exposed a major club’s frailties, will only turn the volume up on that conversation.

For Brentford, it felt like the perfect launch to the 2026-27 campaign. For Kayode, it felt like the start of something bigger.
