Michail Antonio Joins Watford – A Statement Signing for the Championship Club

Michail Antonio has a new home – and Watford have a statement signing to prove they mean business.

The Championship club have snapped up the former West Ham United forward on a free transfer, handing the 36-year-old a one-year deal after a month training under Alessio Dionisi at London Colney.

Antonio’s journey to Vicarage Road has been anything but straightforward. His final senior outing for West Ham came in a 3-1 defeat at Leicester City on 3 December 2024. Four days later, he suffered a broken leg in a car crash, an injury that threatened to drag the curtain down on a decade-long spell in claret and blue and, perhaps, on his top-level career altogether.

Released by the Hammers in June 2025 after 10 years of service, Antonio went back to the club to rebuild. He featured twice for their under-21s in Premier League 2, grinding his way back towards fitness and sharpness rather than slipping quietly out of sight.

The comeback route then took him to Qatar. Antonio joined Al-Sailiya and made four appearances for the club, his last outing coming in April. It was a brief stint, but it put minutes back in his legs and his name back in circulation.

There were near-misses too. He trained with Leicester City last December and came close to a move to Brentford, only for a torn calf muscle on the eve of signing to wreck the deal and stall his return to English football yet again.

Watford have decided to end the uncertainty.

“Watford is a big club and hopefully I can come in and bring success and help wherever I can,” Antonio told the club’s website, laying out his intent in typically direct fashion.

He will wear the number 18 shirt at Vicarage Road and becomes the Hornets’ 12th signing of a busy summer, a window that has quietly reshaped Dionisi’s squad. The deal has been announced subject to international clearance, which the club hope will arrive in time for Antonio to be involved in Saturday’s Championship home clash with Stoke City.

For Dionisi, Antonio offers experience, physical presence and a proven record across the English pyramid. Before his move to West Ham in September 2015, the Jamaican international built his reputation in the EFL with spells at Reading, Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest, terrorising defences with his power and direct running.

Watford sit 12th in the table after six games, with two wins, two draws and two defeats under their new head coach. It has been a steady, if unspectacular, start.
