Mike Dean's Controversial Refereeing Antics Spark Outrage
Mike Dean has sparked fury after admitting he used to “joke about” and play “games” while refereeing Premier League matches.
The former top-flight official, who took charge of 553 Premier League fixtures over more than 20 years, lifted the lid on his on‑field antics during an appearance on the Jamie Vardy’s Having a Party podcast.
Dean’s whistle “games”
Now 58 and retired from on-pitch duties since 2022, Dean told Vardy he sometimes tried to amuse himself in the middle of elite fixtures by setting personal challenges, including seeing how long he could go without blowing his whistle.
“There used to be games that we used to have, as a laugh,” Dean said. “We used to say something like: ‘We’ll kick off now, right? See how long we can go without blowing the whistle.’”
“Done that a few times in the Premier League, before VAR obviously. Went 20 to 25 minutes without blowing a whistle a few times. Let it go, let it go, let it go.”
He went on to describe another routine in which he barely moved from the centre circle.
“I used to do another thing in the Premier League. I used to stand in the centre circle and see how long I could stay in the centre circle before I had to leave. That was just me joking about,” he added.
“But the lads used to be on the line saying ‘you can’t’. I said ‘I’ll try it’. I just used to kind of run around, kind of go, but don’t go out of it. Got about 15 minutes once in one game, without leaving the centre circle.”
Dean’s comments, coming from one of the most recognisable referees of the Premier League era, have landed badly within the officiating community. Those currently involved in refereeing are understood to have reacted with bemusement, with some pointing to a lack of concrete detail around the matches he referenced.
Refereeing in England is now overseen by Pro Ref – the rebranded body formerly known as Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) – which has been approached for comment on Dean’s remarks.
Agbonlahor: “Are you a child?”
Outside the refereeing circle, the reaction was far less restrained. Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor, speaking on talkSPORT, tore into Dean’s revelations.
“He’s trying to be funny but it’s not funny. You’re not funny, Mike Dean, that sums you up,” Agbonlahor said.
“He’s throwing himself under the bus. This is the Premier League. Are you a child?
“It doesn’t sit right with me at all. I was thinking ‘Mike Dean managed a lot of games I played in’. One word to describe him, I’d say, is a prat.”
Dean, who had a brief stint working as a VAR assistant after hanging up his whistle, has long divided opinion with his flamboyant style and high-profile presence on the pitch. These latest comments only deepen the debate over where entertainment ends and professionalism must begin at the very top of the game.
