Mike Solan Set to Lead Offaly Footballers

Mike Solan is poised to take charge of the Offaly footballers after being put forward by the Faithful County’s management committee as their choice for the senior job.

The former Longford boss, who stepped away from that role earlier this month, will now go before the September county board meeting for ratification. If approved, he will take the reins on a three-year term, signalling a fresh chapter for a county searching for momentum.

Solan will not be coming in alone. His backroom team is set to include respected coach Joe Keane — who has worked with Mayo, Sligo and Longford — and Offaly great Nigel Dunne, the man who steered the county’s minors to a landmark Leinster title in 2025, ending a 35-year wait for provincial glory at that grade.

It marks the latest step in a coaching journey that has already taken Solan through several inter-county setups. He previously managed the Mayo Under-21s and served on Andy Moran’s management ticket in Leitrim, building a reputation as a modern, detailed operator on the sideline.

Offaly have been in transition since the joint-management team of Mickey Harte and Declan Kelly walked away last month. Harte, who came in alongside Kelly for the 2024 season with Kelly already in place from the previous year, had weighed up staying on for another campaign before both men ultimately opted to step down.

Now the county has turned to Solan and a new ticket. The next move rests with the delegates in September.
