Mykhailo Mudryk's Loan Move: Chelsea Rejects Leeds Bid

Chelsea have knocked back an opening season-long loan bid from Leeds United for winger Mykhailo Mudryk, but the door to Elland Road is very much still ajar.

The first proposal from Leeds fell well short of what Chelsea are prepared to accept, yet talks are ongoing and the Ukraine international is understood to be keen on the move. At 25, and after nearly two years out, he knows he needs games. Lots of them.

Mudryk has already agreed in principle to spend the coming campaign away from Stamford Bridge to rebuild his match fitness. His career was abruptly halted by a 20‑month suspension after he tested positive for the banned substance meldonium. The ban ended in July, and since then he has been eased back into action on Chelsea’s pre-season tour under new head coach Xabi Alonso, making a handful of appearances from the bench as he tries to restart a stalled top-flight career.

Premier League or bust – that is Mudryk’s preference.

He has made that clear in recent conversations, even with interest arriving from Strasbourg – part of the same BlueCo ownership group as Chelsea – and from several Italian clubs. England remains his priority.

That stance has pushed Leeds to the front of the queue. The Yorkshire club are prepared to take Mudryk on loan without any option to buy, a key condition for Chelsea, who want to retain full control of his long-term future while shifting his wages for the season. For Leeds, it is a chance to add a high-ceiling attacker to a squad already reshaped this summer.

The Whites have been busy. Harry Wilson has arrived from Fulham to bolster the frontline, Tarik Muharemovic has come in from Sassuolo at centre-back, James Trafford has been signed from Manchester City in goal, and Nico Elvedi has joined from Borussia Monchengladbach to strengthen the defence. At one stage, Leeds also showed interest in Chelsea striker Liam Delap, but that trail has cooled.

Leeds are not alone in circling Mudryk. Brentford looked a realistic landing spot and remain admirers. They tried to sign him months before Chelsea completed a deal with Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023 worth an initial £61m and had hoped this summer to secure a loan with an option to buy. Chelsea refused to include that clause, and Brentford’s hopes faded.

Coventry City have also registered their interest, while a move to Strasbourg stays on the table as Chelsea weigh up how best to use their French affiliate. The London club are exploring the idea of sending other players there as well, including midfielder Dario Essugo.

For now, all paths seem to point away from Stamford Bridge. Chelsea do not completely rule out Mudryk staying, but the prospect is viewed as slim. A Premier League lifeline, with Leeds currently leading the chase, looks far more likely to decide the next chapter of a career that urgently needs rhythm, minutes and a fresh start.
