Newcastle's Pursuit of Alvaro Montoro: A Long-Term Strategy
Newcastle’s youth-first rebuild has a new name on the board – but this one might have to wait.
The club’s recruitment team has spent the summer scouring the market for high-upside prospects, stocking Matthias Jaissle’s squad with players 21 and under while deliberately looking beyond short-term fixes for the first team. Now that search has stretched to Brazil and a 19-year-old Argentine midfielder turning heads at Botafogo: Alvaro Montoro.
A crowded queue for Montoro
The teenager is not exactly a hidden gem anymore. According to Globo Esporte journalist Letícia Marques, Newcastle sit in a packed line of admirers that underlines just how quickly Montoro’s reputation has grown.
AC Milan, Ajax, Sporting CP, Real Betis, Wolverhampton Wanderers and MLS side Atlanta United have all registered interest, with clubs from Europe generally placing his value around €20 million (£17.3 million).
“The list of clubs interested in Montoro is long: Atlanta United, Betis, Milan, Newcastle, Ajax, Sporting, and Wolverhampton,” Marques reported. “There were indications of an offer in the region of 20 million euros. However, negotiations did not advance due to Botafogo's decision to keep the player at this time.”
That stance has been decisive. Botafogo have already knocked back a proposal at roughly that level from another South American club, a clear signal they believe Montoro is worth more than the current bids and, crucially, not for sale in this window.
Botafogo’s U-turn and stronger hand
Earlier in the year, the story looked very different. As Marques outlined, Botafogo initially planned to cash in on Montoro and teammate Danilo during the first half of the year to ease financial pressure.
Then GDA arrived as a new investor.
Fresh money changed the mood and the model. With the club on firmer financial ground, the urgency to sell vanished and the priority switched to keeping key assets at least until the end of the Brazilian season. Montoro and Danilo, once seen as potential lifelines, are now pillars of the project.
Botafogo have underlined that by tying Montoro down to a new contract reportedly running through December 2030, a deal that significantly strengthens their position at any future negotiating table.
On the pitch, the numbers back up the club’s resolve. Since joining from Vélez Sarsfield last year, Montoro has produced six goals and seven assists in 59 appearances – impressive output for a teenager adapting to a new league and a new country.
Newcastle must play the long game
For Newcastle, that firm “not now” from Rio does not feel like a permanent “no”.
Marques reports that Montoro wants to play in Europe and that his camp has been told Botafogo could reopen talks once the Brazilian domestic season finishes. “The player is interested in playing in Europe, but understands the club's decision not to negotiate his transfer at this time,” she noted.
So the path is clear, if not simple. Wait. Scout. Stay in the conversation. And be ready for a very different price.
If the current consensus around €20 million has already been brushed aside, any auction involving Milan, Ajax, Sporting CP and Premier League money will only push the number higher. Botafogo, armed with long-term security and a player under contract until 2030, can afford to be stubborn.
Newcastle have shown they are willing to invest heavily in potential when they truly believe in a profile. The question now is whether Montoro is the next big swing in that strategy – and how high they are prepared to go when Botafogo finally open the door.
