Newcastle United's Pursuit of Christopher Nkunku: A Tug-of-War with Leipzig
Newcastle United are still in the fight for Christopher Nkunku – but they are no longer in control of it.
The AC Milan forward is certain to leave San Siro before the transfer window shuts, frozen out to the point of not even being given a squad number. On the table are two escape routes: a return to RB Leipzig or a move to the Premier League with Newcastle. Right now, only one of those is the player’s choice.
Player wants Leipzig, Milan waits for Newcastle
Reports in Italy and Germany paint a clear picture. Fabrizio Romano revealed on Friday that both Newcastle and Leipzig had gone directly to Milan to explore a deal. At that stage, a reunion with Leipzig looked almost inevitable.
Since then, the ground has shifted.
TuttoMercato journalist Daniel Najjar reports that Nkunku has already reached an agreement with Leipzig and told Milan he wants to go back to his former club. That is his priority. His mind is set on Germany.
Milan, though, hold the contract and the power. And they are in no rush to simply wave him back to the Bundesliga.
According to Najjar, the Serie A side are deliberately stalling, convinced Newcastle can put more money on the table in terms of loan fee and financial conditions. “Milan continues to wait for Newcastle, the Rossoneri believing they can present a better offer in terms of the loan fee and the terms,” he reported. “The player currently absolutely wants to go to Leipzig.”
Money on one side, appeal on the other
The tug-of-war is now as much about finances as it is about feeling.
Earlier in the saga, Calciomercato’s Daniele Longo reported that Newcastle had already submitted the strongest financial proposal to Milan. Yet Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg indicated Leipzig still held the edge because Nkunku sees them as the more attractive sporting project.
That tension explains why the deal remains unresolved. Milan are open to respecting Nkunku’s preference – but only if Leipzig’s offer matches their valuation. If not, they are more than happy to steer him towards Tyneside, where the money looks firmer.
TuttoMercato’s Nicholas Righi details the current framework: Milan and Leipzig are working on a loan with an option to buy, with the total package potentially climbing to around €33–35 million (£28.5–30 million). Newcastle, by contrast, are said to be prepared to go straight in with a permanent transfer worth roughly €35 million (£30 million).
For Milan, that is a cleaner, more lucrative solution. For Nkunku, it is not the one he wants.
Nkunku’s past shapes his future
His stance is easy to understand. Nkunku’s best years came in Leipzig colours. Between 2019 and 2023 he hit 70 goals and 56 assists in 172 appearances, collecting individual honours and establishing himself as one of the Bundesliga’s standout forwards.
That history carries weight. It is why Leipzig’s sporting appeal can compete with, or even trump, Newcastle’s financial strength. It is also why Milan are still waiting, hoping the Premier League club decide the player’s reluctance is a price worth paying.
Newcastle now face a blunt decision: push harder for a forward who clearly sees his future back in Germany, or walk away and find someone who actually wants to wear black and white.
