Newcastle United Eye Geny Catamo Amidst January Ambitions

Newcastle United are already looking beyond a quiet, youth-focused summer and into a January window that could ask tougher questions of their ambition – and their budget. One name is starting to sit near the top of the scouting lists: Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo.

The 25-year-old Mozambique international has emerged as a serious option, with Newcastle stepping up their checks in recent weeks, according to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey. They are not alone. Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Brighton have all watched him, while Aston Villa are also keeping tabs on his situation.

Catamo has done his part to justify the attention. He has opened the season sharply in Portugal, producing two goals and three assists in his first seven appearances. Those numbers, combined with his age and upward trajectory, fit neatly with the type of profile Newcastle have targeted under their current recruitment strategy.

This is not a new file on the Sporting winger. Bailey reports that multiple clubs, including Premier League sides, made contact with Catamo’s camp earlier in the summer and have continued to monitor him since. The problem is not interest. It is Sporting’s stance.

Sunderland know that better than anyone. The Black Cats pushed hard for Catamo in the last window and made him a leading target, only to hit a brick wall. Sporting refused to negotiate and pointed every suitor straight to his €60 million (£51 million) release clause. Sunderland walked away rather than meet that figure.

They have not walked away from the player, though. Sunderland remain keen, but now face heavyweight competition from Newcastle, Brentford, Forest, Brighton and Villa, with the Premier League suddenly crowded around the same talent.

One thing tilts slightly in the English clubs’ favour: Catamo’s own ambition. As Bailey reports, the winger is more than open to a move to the Premier League and is attracted by the idea of testing himself in England. That willingness removes one of the usual hurdles in cross-border deals. The real question is whether Sporting will budge.

So far, there is no sign that Newcastle have made an offer or opened formal talks with the Portuguese club. Everything hangs on January. If Sporting soften their insistence on the full €60 million release clause, the chase could turn into a genuine battle between several Premier League sides. If they dig in again, Newcastle must decide whether Catamo is a statement signing worth paying top-tier money for – or a talent to admire from distance while they look elsewhere.
