Newcastle United Pursues Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City
Newcastle United’s move for Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez has hit its most encouraging phase yet, with the Premier League champions now prepared to sanction his exit.
What began as a tentative enquiry earlier in the week has accelerated quickly. The Athletic’s David Ornstein first revealed on Tuesday that Newcastle had opened talks for the 24-year-old. Soon after, Fabrizio Romano reported that City were “quite open” to negotiating a sale, even though Gonzalez’s own wish to stay in Manchester looked like the biggest stumbling block.
That stance inside the Etihad has now hardened.
City open the door
Romano summed up the situation bluntly: City, despite being light in midfield, are not shutting the door on Gonzalez leaving. The club want the right proposal, but they are willing to talk. For Newcastle, that alone marked a shift. City rarely invite bids for players they see as central to their plans.
Now, according to Craig Hope of the Daily Mail, the message to the player is even clearer. City have told Gonzalez he can leave, with talks with Newcastle ongoing. The midfielder is open to the move, though some of his team-mates have tried to convince him to stay.
Inside St. James’ Park, Gonzalez is understood to be one of three midfield options on the table. At this stage, he is viewed as the leading target.
Only a few weeks ago, that would have sounded unlikely. Gonzalez spoke publicly of his desire to fight for his place.
“I’m happy here. I don’t want to leave and I think the club wants me to stay,” he said earlier this month. “I don’t think any player has the position guaranteed for all the matches. Everyone has to work hard.”
Those words landed like a firm “no” to suitors. City’s new manager Enzo Maresca has since changed the temperature.
Maresca’s message
On Friday, Maresca was asked about several players who struggled for minutes last season, Gonzalez among them. His answer was pointed.
“Apart from Rodri, they all have in common one thing: they didn’t play a lot,” he said. “When they don’t play, probably they prefer to leave.”
It was the clearest sign yet that City are ready to trim a bloated midfield group and that Gonzalez’s route to regular football in Manchester looks blocked. Once the club indicate a player is expendable, minds can change quickly. Gonzalez’s included.
For Newcastle, two of the biggest barriers have suddenly lowered. City’s willingness to sell should make negotiations less hostile and the fee more realistic. At the same time, a player who insisted he wanted to stay now has a manager effectively nudging him towards the exit. The project at St. James’ Park becomes far easier to sell when the alternative is another season on the fringes.
Newcastle’s rebuild
None of this means a deal is done. There is no agreement between the clubs yet, and Newcastle are keeping other options alive in case City or Gonzalez row back and decide against the move.
The stakes are obvious. Matthias Jaissle is rebuilding his midfield after the departures of Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali, and he needs an immediate pillar in that area of the pitch. If Newcastle can close this transfer, Gonzalez would walk in as one of the most established pieces in that new structure and a strong candidate to go straight into the starting XI.
Newcastle have already brought in youngsters Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba, but both are signings for tomorrow. Gonzalez is for now. He carries the kind of top-level experience and readiness that Jaissle’s reshaped midfield currently lacks.
