Newcastle United Close to Signing La Masia's Guille Fernández
Newcastle’s youth drive shows no sign of slowing, and now the club is closing in on one of La Masia’s brightest midfielders.
Newcastle United, already deep into a summer of aggressive investment in young talent, is reportedly close to signing 18-year-old Barcelona prospect Guille Fernández, as the hierarchy continues to balance long-term planning with the search for ready-made starters.
Another teenager on the way
The Magpies have already moved decisively for youth in midfield, bringing in 18-year-old Sean Steur and 20-year-old Aladji Bamba. On Wednesday, reports linked them strongly with 18-year-old Guinea international Ousmane Diabate, suggesting a clear pattern rather than a one-off flurry.
Now, according to DAZN journalist Albert Fernández, Newcastle is in advanced talks to add yet another teenager in the middle of the park, this time from Barcelona’s famed academy.
“FC Barcelona is currently working on the transfers of young players while not entirely losing the option to buy them back,” Fernández reported. “This is the case with the Fernández cousins. Right now, Guille is close to Newcastle and Toni to Bayer Leverkusen. Although there are other teams bidding.”
The message is blunt: Newcastle are at the front of the queue, but they’re not alone.
La Masia talent, limited pathway
Guille Fernández has not yet made his senior debut for Barcelona, but he has climbed steadily through La Masia and into the club’s reserve setup. He is already a Spain Under-19 international and can operate across several central midfield roles, a versatility that fits neatly with Newcastle’s evolving, high-energy style.
He is listed on Barcelona’s first-team roster heading into the 2027-27 season and carries a market value of around €3 million. The problem for him in Catalonia is obvious: the path to regular minutes in a stacked senior midfield is steep, and Barcelona are open to moving him on — just not entirely on.
Fernández’s report underlines that Barcelona want to retain some form of control over the youngster’s future. That almost certainly points to a buy-back clause or similar mechanism being written into any agreement, allowing the Spanish giants to reclaim him if his development explodes in England.
No specific transfer fee or structure has been reported yet, nor the exact details of any proposed buy-back. What is clear is that competition exists, and any bidding war could push the final price beyond his current valuation.
A rebuild with a clear age profile
For Newcastle, the pursuit of Guille Fernández fits seamlessly into an increasingly defined strategy. The club is not just signing young players; it is stockpiling high-upside midfielders who can grow together and, potentially, underpin the squad for years.
At the same time, this is not a purely developmental window. While the club chases La Masia’s next wave, it is also targeting a more established midfielder capable of immediately offsetting the loss of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes. Man City’s Nico Gonzalez, himself another La Masia product, has emerged as a key name in that search.
So Newcastle’s summer has split into two parallel tracks: one eye on the present, one firmly locked on the future. Guille Fernández sits firmly in the latter category, but his arrival would say plenty about the club’s belief in its long-term project.
If the deal is completed, it will be another sign that Newcastle intend to build their next great midfield rather than simply buy it ready-made.
