Newcastle United Eye Youssouf Fofana as Midfield Reinforcement

Newcastle United’s search for midfield reinforcements has taken another turn, with AC Milan’s Youssouf Fofana emerging as the latest name on a growing shortlist.

With little more than two weeks left in the transfer window and Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali already gone, Matthias Jaissle is pushing for both experience and depth in the middle of the pitch. Newcastle have sounded out Bayern Munich over Joao Palhinha, kept tabs on Tottenham youngster Lucas Bergvall, and now turned their attention to a France international who suddenly finds himself unwanted in Milan.

Fofana pushed towards the exit

Italian journalist Matteo Moretto reported on Saturday that Milan have informed Fofana he is no longer part of their plans.

“Fofana is on his way out, and he was informed of this in person,” Moretto said, via MilanNews, underlining just how clear the message from the Serie A club has been.

That clarity has sparked interest. Moretto revealed that three clubs have already approached Milan to ask about the 27-year-old’s situation.

“I can tell you that Nottingham have inquired, Newcastle have inquired, and Juventus have inquired,” he said.

No one, though, has made the decisive move.

“There aren’t any advanced negotiations with any specific club at this time,” Moretto added, stressing that the talks remain at an exploratory stage.

Juventus push harder as Newcastle watch on

If Newcastle are hovering, Juventus look closer to acting. Moretto described Fofana as “certainly an option” for the Turin club and confirmed that Juve and Milan have already held conversations over a possible deal and wider “market developments.”

That leaves Newcastle in a familiar position: interested, active, but not yet at the table with an offer.

For Jaissle, the profile is tempting. Fofana only joined Milan from Monaco in 2024 for around €20 million (£17.3 million) and is under contract until 2028, but Milan’s stance has opened the door. Reports differ slightly on the fee required, yet most place the asking price in the €15–20 million range (£13–17 million).

In a market where Palhinha would command a far higher sum and Bergvall represents more of a long-term project, Fofana could be the comparatively economical option. A ready-made international midfielder, potentially available for less than Milan paid just months ago.

An open race with the clock ticking

For now, the situation is fluid. Milan want to sell, Fofana is available, and several clubs are circling, but no one has committed.

Moretto’s line remains the clearest snapshot of where things stand: “There aren’t any advanced negotiations with any specific club at this time.”

Newcastle have inquired. Juventus have talked. Nottingham Forest are in the conversation. The window is closing fast.

The question now is simple: will Newcastle turn that early enquiry into a concrete bid, or watch a viable Guimaraes replacement slip into someone else’s midfield?
