Nico Elvedi's Strong Debut at Leeds United

Nico Elvedi did not tiptoe into life at Leeds United. He walked straight into a scrap.

Thrown in for his debut in the Carabao Cup second-round win over Nottingham Forest, the summer signing came through a physical duel with Chris Wood and a fierce contest at the City Ground with a mixture of relief, pride and quiet ambition.

“It was great. I'm proud of this team after that performance. We deserved this win, but it was a very strong performance from the home team as well. I'm happy we are going through to the next stage,” Elvedi said, still processing a first competitive outing in Leeds colours.

Forest pushed. Leeds held. The tie never really settled, and Elvedi’s night quickly turned into a wrestling match with a familiar Premier League presence up front.

“My performance was OK. I had a hard battle with Chris Wood which wasn't easy,” he admitted. “I like it when the player I'm marking is strong, and I think I did well. There are still things for me to improve but, for my first game of the season, it was OK.”

No fanfare, no overstatement. Just a defender measuring himself against the standard he expects.

What shone through more than anything was how quickly he has embraced the move. After 11 years at Borussia Monchengladbach, this could easily have felt like a wrench. Instead, it already sounds like a fit.

“I'm so happy to be here. I have some great new team-mates, so it was very easy to come to this club. Every day is fun coming into the training sessions and playing on the pitch with these good players,” he said, the grin almost audible.

Leaving Monchengladbach, though, was no simple goodbye.

“It was hard because that club was my family. I had a lot of good memories there, but this is a new step in my career so I'm happy to be here.”

One era closed in Germany. A new one has started in Yorkshire, with a cup win, a bruising battle and a defender already talking like he belongs.
