Nicolo Tresoldi's Future: Germany or Italy?

Nicolo Tresoldi’s international future is turning into one of European football’s quieter tug-of-wars.

The Club Brugge forward has already worn the Germany shirt 24 times at U21 level, yet the 22-year-old still has not committed to Die Mannschaft for the long term. Italy, the country of his birth, remains very much in the frame.

Germany U21 coach Antonio Di Salvo, speaking to Kicker, laid bare the uncertainty.

“This is not a question that needs to be asked of me, but I have spoken to him and he said that he still can't make a decision,” Di Salvo said.

For now, though, Germany still has him.

Tresoldi has chosen to continue with the U21s, delaying any definitive call on whether his senior career will unfold in a Germany shirt or in the colours of the Azzurri.

“And that is a great sign for us,” Di Salvo added, relieved to keep one of his key attackers in the fold a little longer.

A Modern Dilemma

Di Salvo framed Tresoldi’s hesitation as a symbol of the modern game rather than a lack of conviction.

“I think the world has changed. 20 or 30 years ago, players didn't have to make these decisions at all,” he said. “But the world has become more global, and many players have the opportunity to play for a second or even a third country. If they need time, you have to give them that time.”

Tresoldi’s story explains the crossroads.

Born in Cagliari to an Italian father and an Argentine mother of Italian descent, he grew up with layered roots and multiple flags within reach. At 13, his family moved to Germany, where he joined Hannover 96 and began to build his career in the country he would later represent. He eventually acquired German citizenship, opening the door to his current role in the U21 setup.

Now at Club Brugge and rising, his next decision will not just define a career milestone. It could shape the attacking line of either Germany or Italy for years to come.

For the moment, he remains in Di Salvo’s plans. The real choice lies ahead.
