Nottingham Forest Sign Delap for £50 Million
Nottingham Forest have made their statement signing of the summer, completing a deal for Delap worth an initial £45 million, with a further £5m tied up in add-ons.
The 23-year-old striker has signed a long-term contract that runs until 2031, arriving at the City Ground after just a single season at Chelsea. For the London club, it represents sharp business: they bank an instant £20m profit having bought him from Ipswich Town for around £30m in June 2025.
Forest, though, are not interested in Chelsea’s balance sheet. They believe they’ve bought their No 9 for the future.
Delap: “This is a massive club”
Delap wasted no time outlining his ambition and enthusiasm for the move, talking up both the club and head coach Oliver Glasner.
“I really can't wait to get started, this is a massive club with a big history,” he told club media. “I spoke to the manager and I like his way, I think he can be the one to really help me develop and make that next step and hopefully I can bring goals here.
“I can't wait to hear the noise at the City Ground and have the fans on my side because I know how loud and important they are. As a team we can build something really strong and the main aim is to challenge and be a top club in the Premier League.”
It is exactly the kind of language Forest supporters want to hear from a record signing: hungry, ambitious, and aware of the demands that come with the shirt.
Pedigree behind the price
On paper, one league goal for Chelsea last season hardly screams £50m striker. Forest’s recruitment team have clearly looked deeper.
Delap’s reputation was forged at Ipswich Town in the 2024-25 campaign, when he scored 12 league goals in a struggling side that ultimately went down. His output there convinced Chelsea to move, and it has now persuaded Forest to go even bigger.
The numbers back up the eye test. Delap recorded 26 shot-ending carries that season, the highest figure among all Premier League strikers. Pace, power, and an almost relentless drive with the ball made him one of the most direct forwards in the division, even as Ipswich slid towards relegation.
Forest are betting that, surrounded by better service and under Glasner’s guidance, those underlying traits will translate into goals and points rather than just promise.
Four into one: a crowded No 9 battle
Life at the City Ground will not be gentle. Delap walks straight into a fierce fight for the central striker role, with Chris Wood, Igor Jesus and Arnaud Kalimuendo all vying for the same spot.
Wood brings experience and penalty-box nous. Kalimuendo offers movement and sharp finishing. Igor Jesus adds flair. Delap arrives with a price tag that screams “first choice” but a manager who has never been afraid to rotate his attack.
He might not have to wait long to show why Forest have pushed so hard to get him. The club travel to Anfield this weekend to face Liverpool, searching for a response after back-to-back defeats against Leeds United in both the Premier League opener and the Carabao Cup.
Anfield is no place for passengers. If selected, Delap will be asked to lead the line, scrap for every ball, and give Forest a more ruthless edge in front of goal.
For £45m, rising to £50m, that ruthlessness is not a luxury. It’s the expectation.
