Andre Onana’s future at Manchester United may be mapped out on paper, but his name refuses to leave Premier League conversations.
The Cameroonian goalkeeper has officially rejoined Trabzonspor on a second consecutive season-long loan for the 2026-27 campaign, again without an option to buy. His contract at United still runs until June 2028, so this is a temporary escape rather than a clean break.
Yet even while he prepares for another year in the Turkish Super Lig, his profile continues to attract admirers in England.
Onana’s passing still turns heads
Speaking to Premier Bet, Quinton Fortune underlined why top English sides continue to keep an eye on Onana. For the former Manchester United midfielder, the 30-year-old’s distribution remains elite and perfectly tuned to the modern game.
"André Onana could be an asset to Chelsea, Newcastle United or Aston Villa in the Premier League," Fortune said, pointing straight at the clubs who want to build from the back. Managers demanding their teams start attacks with the goalkeeper know exactly what they would be buying.
You can see it in one action: a 50- or 60-yard ball fizzed into a striker’s feet, or clipped into a midfielder between the lines. Fortune stressed that this ability to break pressure with a single pass can transform a team’s approach and tempo, calling Onana "one of the best at it."
The issue is no secret. Confidence. When a goalkeeper makes a mistake, there is nowhere to hide and no way to rewind. "He just needs to find his confidence again now because when a goalkeeper makes a mistake unfortunately the whole world sees it," Fortune noted, adding that he hopes the Trabzonspor spell helps Onana rediscover his best level. For any side obsessed with playing out from the back, Fortune believes he "can be outstanding."
Chelsea’s new leaders: Welbeck and Henderson
Fortune did not stop at the goalkeeping debate. The ex-South Africa international also weighed in on Chelsea’s summer rebuild under Xabi Alonso, and his focus quickly shifted to leadership.
Chelsea have moved for experience, bringing in Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson to stiffen a dressing room that has felt raw and erratic in recent seasons. Fortune likes the strategy. He just wishes one of those moves had gone in a different direction.
"Xabi Alonso made some good signings for Chelsea this summer but I wish we could have seen Danny Welbeck return to Manchester United," he admitted. For a former United man, seeing an academy product and proven professional head to Stamford Bridge instead of Old Trafford stings a little.
Alonso’s logic, though, is clear to Fortune. After his time at Real Madrid, the Chelsea head coach knows the value of strong characters in a squad loaded with young talent and big fees. "By signing Welbeck and Jordan Henderson he wants to bring in some leaders to set good examples which you need at a club like Chelsea," Fortune said.
That is the crux of it. Not just ability, but personality. He believes Alonso has studied the Chelsea dressing room, sensed a void, and moved decisively. "He’s looked at the Chelsea dressing room, felt that it was lacking something, and brought in the players with the right personalities and experience to make a difference in Henderson and Welbeck," Fortune added.
"They are not only top, top players but great professionals too."
