Orlando Pirates Bid Farewell to Deano van Rooyen
Orlando Pirates have confirmed the surprise departure of defender Deano van Rooyen, drawing a swift line under a short but industrious spell in Soweto.
The club announced on Friday that the 28-year-old full-back will leave by mutual consent after what they described as “open conversations” about his future and his desire to pursue a new chapter in his career.
In a statement, Pirates said Van Rooyen and the club had agreed that “the time is right” for him to move on, bringing an early end to a stint that began with genuine optimism.
Van Rooyen arrived from Stellenbosch FC ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, carrying a reputation as one of the Betway Premiership’s most reliable full-backs. He slotted straight into the Buccaneers’ structure, valued as much for his attitude as for his defensive work and energy down the flank.
He did not hide, whether starting or coming off the bench. Coaches leaned on his consistency; teammates leaned on his professionalism. Pirates highlighted that he “delivered exactly what was asked of him” and labelled him a model professional during his time at the club.
That spell produced over 50 appearances in black and white — a solid body of work, even if it never quite turned into a long-term stay.
Now, with the ink dry on the agreement, Pirates must find their next solution at full-back. Van Rooyen, meanwhile, walks away with his reputation intact and the freedom to choose where his next challenge will begin.
